Trump_is_Mentally_fit Posted March 27 Posted March 27 CNBC: President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would impose 25% tariffs on “all cars that are not made in the United States.” Trump said there is “absolutely no tariff” for cars that are built in the U.S. Auto stocks fell in after-hours trading following Trump’s announcement. Scharf said the tariffs will result in “over $100 billion of new annual revenue” to the U.S. <----Hey MAGA, those are taxes on Americans
Trump_is_Mentally_fit Posted March 27 Posted March 27 This is a great article that traces the supply chains of the auto industry from the initial ingot of Canadien aluminum crossing the border multiple times and ends up in a Chevy differential. Vehicles are going to cost thousands more. That's a tax on American consumers https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/03/02/tarrifs-auto-industry-car-parts-cost/ 1

If it doesn’t go well it will just be the tax with no further job creation. Sweet Edited March 27 by Mikie2times 1

When will MAGAs learn that the golden age of industrial labor is long over?

Prior to Nafta there was a deal called the autopac to balance production and sales of vehicles between Canada and US. If 10% of sales were in Canada, 10% of vehicles by dollar must be built in Canada. Then Nafta which gave Mexico the advantage as quotas disappeared because vehicles were becoming too costly as a result of the hold on companies by unions in US and Canada. Wages in Mexico dropped prices and increased big 3 profits. Other industries followed. Canada lost more jobs proportionate to US. Then trump signed Nafta #2 USMCA, now he violates it. If nothing else he proves to be untrustworthy. Factories will return to US, Canadians will buy 3only Canadian and Japanese and Korean and Euro cars. US will lose 10% of sales opportunities between the countries, unions will have control, costs will quickly rise. By 2030 US produced vehicles will cost 20% more without tariffs and sales will be 10% less in NA, and 50% less in the rest of the world. We have been here before. The wheel is being reinvented. Reagan got it. Trump does not. This is not real-estate. 3

Losing jobs that robots do, that are largely unskilled, that if we created will pay 4x more because of the unions (remember, you guys don't like those). While the rest of us absorb the cost. That is the absolute best case scenario. By all means, educate me on how this will work if I'm missing something. 1

What 3rd world countries? Why did auto companies go to Mexico for, costs! Unions priced America out of the world. Technology was lacking. You would still be driving rear wheeled Edsels if the world had not been allowed in. Only 3rd world countries need tariffs to protect themselves. This is a manufactured investment situation. The bubble will break in 5 or 6 years. It has happened before. The US lost the steel industry because of antiquated technology, low profits due to labor costs, unions domination, stagnation. They could not compete. Trump is creating a false economy. But so be it. 1 1 1

The US lost the steel industry because of antiquated technology, low profits due to labor costs, unions domination, stagnation. They could not compete. Trump is creating a false economy. But so be it. I'm old enough to remember when NAFTA looked - at least with respect to Canada - like the beginnings of an EU style open border. This would have been a major move forward. Free flow of business and people. A new future. A freer and more efficient one. Then 9/11 happened. And the uncontrolled U.S.-Mexico (yes, the fault of the U.S., starting bigly with Bush 43 and amplifying every administration since) followed. And now we've retrogressed to a U.S.-Canada situation far worse than the one I grew up with as a kid in Buffalo. Think about the express policy now: we will levy high tariffs on Canadian goods to encourage manufacturers to move production south of the border. Oh, but meanwhile we will seek to annex Canada as the 51st state, meaning that we are seeking to impoverish that new state. It is so ridiculously incoherent that it could only come from the mind of Donald J. Trump. Elect a clown, expect a circus. 1 1
