Hyundai unveils $21bn US expansion as Trump tariffs loom.

The plan includes a new $5.8bn steel plant in the southern state of Louisiana.

Hyundai also said it will expand its American vehicle production and invest billions of dollars in new technology including autonomous driving and

artificial intelligence (AI).

“This investment is a clear demonstration that tariffs very strongly work,” Trump said during the event at the White House on Monday.

He added that more tariffs on vehicle imports are likely to be announced this week.

Hyundai said the new steelmaking facility will produce more than 2.7 million metric tons of steel a year and create more than 1,400 jobs.

It is expected to make steel for Hyundai’s plants in Alabama and Georgia.

The announcement also included plans to invest $9bn to boost the firm’s production in the US to 1.2 million vehicles a year by 2028.

Hyundai also said it had earmarked $6bn to expand partnerships with US firms to develop technologies including self-driving vehicles, robotics and AI.

On Wednesday, Hyundai Motor is set to hold an opening ceremony for a new $7.59bn car and battery factory in Georgia.

It already has a manufacturing facility in Alabama and its affiliate Kia has a factory in Georgia.

When fully operational, the three plants will have capacity to make a million vehicles a year, the company said.

CNBC:

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would impose 25% tariffs on “all cars that are not made in the United States.”

Trump said there is “absolutely no tariff” for cars that are built in the U.S.

Auto stocks fell in after-hours trading following Trump’s announcement.

Scharf said the tariffs will result in “over $100 billion of new annual revenue” to the U.S. <----Hey MAGA, those are taxes on Americans

Auto makers said, “this will result in more good Union jobs” so if it goes flawlessly we will have succeeded at increasing the cost of goods for the entire US so we can pay $90 dollars in OT wages to somebody working on a line ( no offense to those that do). If it doesn’t go well it will just be the tax with no further job creation.

Increasing the cost of goods for no reason when they're already at record levels.

You want to keep losing good paying jobs to third world countries? You have no clue what you’re talking about.

Prior to Nafta there was a deal called the autopac to balance production and sales of vehicles between Canada and US. If 10% of sales were in Canada,  10% of vehicles by dollar must be built in Canada.

Then Nafta which gave Mexico  the advantage as quotas disappeared because vehicles were becoming too costly as a result of the hold on companies by unions in US and Canada. Wages in Mexico dropped prices and increased big 3 profits. Other industries followed. Canada lost more jobs proportionate to US.

Then trump signed Nafta #2 USMCA, now he violates it. If nothing else he proves to be untrustworthy.

Factories will return to US, Canadians will buy 3only Canadian and Japanese and Korean and Euro cars. US will lose 10% of sales opportunities between the countries, unions will have control, costs will quickly rise.

By 2030 US produced vehicles will cost 20% more without tariffs and sales will be 10% less in NA, and 50% less in the rest of the world.

We have been here before. The wheel is being reinvented.

Reagan got it. Trump does not. This is not real-estate.
