I’m surprised more people here aren’t in favor of the bill. I’m 100% for it. Giving the CCP the data of millions of Americans while using the app to push their propaganda is unacceptable.

My concern is that instead of putting in safeguards for all social media companies to prevent this kind of stuff (could even use the EU’s GDPR as a template), they just targeted TikTok.

Seems like a big win for Meta, Alphabet, etc. to have the government eliminate a competitor.

Better than nothing but definitely not ideal.

For me it’s a matter of having congressional oversight, like when we took Facebook to court a few years back

For sure. We definitely need to do something, and I don’t want to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

That being said, I’m worried that they just wipe their hands after this and let the other companies off the hook

Personally, I never saw the need to ban Tik Tok or force its sale to a U.S. investor.

But Trump 45 issued an Executive Order based on his Emergency powers, finding that Tik Tok posed an unacceptable national security risk while under Chinese control.

That was shot down by the courts.

Then Congress made essentially the same  national security findings, passed the ban/sale legislation, and Biden signed it into law. It sailed through Congress, and Senators including Cory Booker and Ron Wyden voted for it.

Now all of a sudden Trump, Booker, Wyden and others are saying "we didn't really mean it." Apparently the hope was a sale of some manner would proceed and push would never come to shove.

A cautionary tale: be careful what you wish for. Trump and Congress made "findings" about national security threats that were largely bs, and now they're stuck with them. So the Supreme Court says go ahead, if you didn't really mean it, well, repeal the legislation. You made this mess, you clean it up.

I think the bigger issue when it comes to apps like TikTok is the younger generations that grew up with these things  simply have a low expectation of personal privacy. They have no desire or concern for keeping their lives private. They have no issue with spilling their personal life across the net. Being older. I have no use for these apps and prefer to keep my personal life as private as possible. Nobody needs to see my dance moves, vacation pics, get real-time updates on my activities, or pics of things like my meals. I don't see why anyone would care about those things. If the Chinese or US governments or anybody else wants to know anything about me they're going to have to work to get it.

It’s not just younger people that use the app. Age range is from very young, to a gentleman who I saw yesterday who is 102.

Young people may be less worried about privacy. Shows when they talk about their hometown in their Tik Tok’s. Or wear their high school/college tshirts online.  That’s not smart online activity.  Safety issue, not data theft issue.

Whats worse? Thinking apps like Facebook, Instagram, etc. are keeping your information private. Just dug into my Facebook settings yesterday and there are a ton of settings to turn off targeted ads….just to turn them off.  Facebook makes a ton of money off of your info. What about the daily data breach that involves your most important info? Stuff that is sold and can ruin your life.

Whats worse? Dancing or whatever on Tik Tok, or having your info harvested or stolen by apps you expect to keep you safe?

I don't disagree but I don't use any social media apps and I have my financial assets and transactions compartmentalized as to avoid having any single breach subjecting everything to risk.

Along with doing simple things like using a pre-paid VISA gift card instead of your regular credit cards for minor purchases on things like fast food apps can limit your exposure.

Nothing is totally secure just by the nature of these apps and cloud computing.

You're likely more diligent with the use of security settings and options. Which is a good thing and a good practice.

It's just one less vector for porn and propaganda.  Besides, I'm sure whatever is posted to FB, Instagram, Snapchat or sent via anything Google is available to whoever is willing to pay.

This is like people bitching that The Matrix has too few plugs.
