1M in cap space but managed to pull this off!

With a long term extension, though, a team these days usually builds in cap SAVINGS in year one. Nothing particularly clever or surprising there.

No idea how they “botched “ anything

Last year Jones was willing to sign a contract that made him the 2nd highest paid DT in the league.

Instead the Chiefs offered him an insulting (relative to his skill set) 3 year, $70M deal

This year they made him the highest paid DT of all time. When he was willing to settle for #2 paid in the league last year.

In 8 months they went from offering him a deal worth a total of $70M to a deal where the guaranteed money alone is nearly 30% higher than that.

KC rarely messes up. But they should have made him a fair offer last season and avoided this. They would have saved a good amount of money.

That's good for us though. It’s obviously stinks they got him back, but it’s good that they paid more this year than they would have him if they just signed him last year.

He wasn’t under contract, so there is no way to build in cap savings in year 1. His cap hit was already $0 (because he wasn’t signed).

Teams sometimes save money on extensions of players they have under contract by pushing the money out. But that wasn’t the case here.

KC Kings are spending future money for they believe they are still in Superbowl window.

Do you believe everything Mike Florio says ? Albert Breer said he wanted more money then Donald last year  … so who do you believe ?

Each side no doubt has their media stooges to leak whatever spin they want …so I don’t know why anyone would take these kind of articles with no direct quotes as gospel ..

Regardless of which source you believe …They have  re-signed him for 5 years …likely with an out after 3 ..I doubt they care much now what happened last year

They have until Wednesday, in that case, to make it all fit?

5 years $160mil is my guess.

Good guess if you didn't see this report before hand.  Travis Kelce is woefully underpaid but luckily he's dating a billionaire.

The cap is a myth. Somehow the Bills have to cut half the team but the Chiefs can pay MaHomes, Jones, Kielce huge contracts among others and tag Sneed, There even looking at acquiring Espensa. The Jets paid huge contracts to Roger’s and Williams and many others and are looking at bringing in a bunch of starting OL. Maybe I’m jumping the gun and there is a good plan but for me the 2024 season might be already over.

They've let guys who signed decent sized contracts walk the last few years (Tyreek Hill, Tyron Matheiu, JuJu, Frank Clark, Eric Fisher, Charvarius Ward, Orlando Brown).  Their biggest whiff is pry Jawaan Taylor.  Regardless, they set themselves up to have the cap room to sign him.  Whether it's worth it to pay a soon to be 30 year old that much money remains to be seen.

Actually, they're 7.4m under and they'll get another 19.8m when they trade Snead, which is probably coming soon. Then they're 89.7m under next year.

It’s essentially a 3 year deal.

But it’s well worth it. Dude is a beast .

But hey we have Von right?

Did anyone really expect him to go anywhere? I always knew he would be in KC for the foreseeable future. I think this pretty much is the extent of their FA though with the re-signing of Jones and Tranquil.

They still have some big name players coming up on FA. Nick Bolton, Creed Humphrey, and Trey Smith all due to be FA's next year. That $89M you're talking about is with them only having 24 players on their roster and it doesn't include the figures from Chris Jones' new contract.

They will have to make some concessions at some spots, probably starting with Snead this year.

But the fact remains, they have it do it. It's not exactly "1m in cap space but managed to pull it off!" situation.

I suggest that the other 31 teams send Jones gift cards for the place Reid gets his chicken nuggets.  Then Jones shows up for training camp out of shape, overweight, and with high cholesterol.

The 7.4 is without adding C Jones contract. That number next year will change significantly when C Jones contract is added. They also only have about 25 players singed next year.

Agree. It was pretty well understood last year that Jones wanted pretty close to a 30 mill/year deal. The Chiefs weren't willing to go there at the time. A few things have changed since then: a) the salary cap increased beyond expectation, and could again in the next few years; b) tranquill ended up being better than expected, and KC now expects to let willie gay walk; c) every KC pick in the secondary, both CBs and safeties, has hit the last few years, making Sneed more expendable than most people realize; and d) chance for immortality to chase a 3peat. KC probably is spending about 3-4 mill per year more for Jones than they'd like the next three years, but being able to work out a 5-year deal, which I'd assume allows them to spread out the signing bonus, makes this more digestible for them.
