Hoo boy, this season has gone  off the rails.

I was at the double-header yesterday and man was it ugly. Mets managed 7 hits over 19 innings and their 2 runs came from one swing of the bat. Throw in some shoddy fielding, a wasted quality start by Megill that included Ohtani going 0-5, another clutch performance by Freddie Freeloader and it made for some frustrating baseball. To make matters worse, there was a large contingent of Dodgers fans in attendance.

Tough to watch.

Very uninspired baseball.

Our “stars” (position players) have been crap.

I Pete knows he’s gone. I don’t think he’s consciously checked out, but his performance has been meh.

Lindor’s slow starts have become ridiculous.

The blown saves have to be at a record-setting pace at this point. It’s crazy.

I feel bad for the starters who’ve been pitching well and keeping us in games.

Gonna be interesting to see who goes besides Pete.

I’m still very optimistic about 2025 and beyond.

Yeah, it looks to me like the joy/passion has left Pete's game. His HR totals are still on track, but he just looks lifeless compared to the old #LFGM Pete. Maybe he knows he's gone, maybe waiting on the contract is an albatross, maybe the losing has worn him down.

100% agree on Lindor's slow starts. It's every freaking year and combined with our top starters consistently missing the first few months every season it puts us in a early hole.

I knew this was going to be a reset year, but I honestly thought they'd be better than this. They are only 6 games from a WC spot but I'd be deluding myself if I was optimistic. I'll look forward to getting Alvarez back and who knows, maybe even Senga, but this looks like a lost year already and like you I'll be interested to see what the trade deadline looks like.

Holy crap, just when you thought it couldn't get worse. Diaz goes on the 15 day IL before the game, Pete gets hit by a pitch and exits the game and their journeyman reliever gets ejected, throws his glove into the stands, calls the Mets the worst #$&%@ team in MLB and gets DFA'd. Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, we lost 10-3.

Diaz is no surprise. I think we all knew he was hurt.

As long as Pete is healthy by the trade deadline. We just need to get A LOT for him.

I was just about to post a link to the story about the reliever.

I think our manager might be in over his head.

This is exactly why I did not (and never) want a rookie manager.

He’s lost the team in record time.

Wow!

Well I certainly didn't know or even think Diaz was hurt. Was his velocity down? My go-to was questioningwhether he was tipping his pitches.

I'm also not on board with piling on the manager - yet. I could not care less that a 31 year old journeyman reliever got DFA'd after first getting ejected and then being called into the managers office and then spouting off to the press anyway.

When a team plays with zero passion in MAY, that is the sign of horrible (or no) leadership.

I never thought about Díaz tipping pitches. Thought he had to be hurt. I just hope it’s not his knee.

If they need to shut him down for the year again, I wouldn’t be sad.

I hope they can turn things around and at least get 83 wins.

Maybe I have rose-colored glasses but I think the team has shown heart. Saw a stat a week or two ago that had them something like (don't quote me) 12-24 in the first two games of a series and 12-6 in the third (aka - getaway day).  Unfortunately while they've displayed heart, they haven't matched it with competence. Lindor is exhibit A. I don't put the .190 average he was carrying in the 3-hole on the manager.

WRT Diaz, tipping pitches has been my first suspicion for any pitcher that goes bad for years,  I gotta give more thought to the injury possibility going forward. Either way it's guesswork on my part.

I’ve wondered about tipping pitches many times over the years. For whatever reason, with Díaz, it never crossed my mind.

But who knows?  It could even be some of both.

I know I’m being a bit harsh on the team and the manager.

I just despise uninspired baseball.

Bit the reality is, they’ve lost quite a few a) close games and b) games in which they held a late lead.

I’m sure it’s frustrating, but I’d rather see them play smarter, harder and more disciplined.

Lots of baseball left!

Nice to see Lindor lead on the field (4-4) after apparently leading in the players-only post game meeting yesterday.

Also nice to see Pete come off the bench with a pinch hit double and score the tying run instead of heading to IL for two weeks.

Lots of baseball left for sure. A couple more wins and I'll get my positive vibes back. That would be nice.

It’ll take more than one win to get back on board paying attention to the team on the field.  See how it all plays out

Another interesting day in Met-land.

They send Narvaez packing. Hard to keep a catcher who can't hit or throw a runner out, but I think they are eating another 8 mill. The money Steve is paying for guys that don't play for the Mets has to be staggering. Narvaez was notable this year for finally getting credit for a caught stealing on a play he had no part in AND having his first Citi Field hit coming in late May as a walk-off.

After sending Baty down it looks like Vientos may actually get a legit shot in the majors. Naturally he alligator arms a foul pop up. but he had a great day at the plate. I don't have high hopes for him but I hope he makes the most of the opportunity.

Looks like Reed Garret's deal with the devil ran out.

A nice story about the Mets calling up a 34 year old: https://nypost.com/2024/05/31/sports/mets-jose-iglesias-longed-for-mlb-return-wont-take-it-for-granted/

That story reminded me a little of Nelson Figueroa.  I always liked that dude and wished the Mets gave him a little more of a chance than they seemed too.

Anyone catch the Strawberry retirement number yesterday?   I missed being a Mets fan during his tenure with the team but retiring his and Doc's numbers seems more like a way to appease a certain amount of the fanbase.  I just think they could have been a lot more than what they were with the team and I remember them more as Yankees than Mets.

But it seemed yesterday Daryl kind of admitted as much apologizing for how thinks could have been different.

I forgot about Strawberry's number retirement - turned on the game just before they unveiled the number. They mentioned his apology during the broadcast and I'd like to hear it. Ultimately in spite of 1986 I feel like Gooden and Strawberry could/should have given us more. And I have mixed emotions on the number retirements. In general I'd prefer if it was a more  exclusive group.

Not much I'm watching in general these days.  The Mets I seem to follow more on google scores.

But yeah I found this game on Youtube that was 27 years old already today.  wow.  If you like watching old Mets games this one comes recommended.  Bobby Jones vs the young Pedro Martinez

I didn't watch the Phillies games but a pretty cool way to end it today for the W.

I'll never forget this game in 2009 when Jeff Francouer hit into a triple play to end it against the Phillies.  That was about as pissed I ever was at an ending in the middle of the season!

Crazy thing is the Mets are only it looks like 3.5 games back of the 3rd Wild card.  Not that I expect much but that's still within arms reach.

Nice(?) memory of the Francouer triple play, I forgot all about that.

London got treated to an entertaining game today, I thought for sure we were gonna blow it. Here's another happy ending for the Mets from '86. Mets were up 6-5 when this play happened:

Ciao! We got back from Italy a week ago Saturday but I just haven't felt much like visiting the boards or posting. The trip was awesome...the people, food, art, history...everything was amazing. There is just too much to see and do in one trip.

I watched both of the games against the Phillies just because they were in London and on early which was nice. Watching at 10:10 AM on Sunday was cool. I fully expected them to lose Saturday against Ranger Suarez and, not surprisingly, that came to fruition. I will say that they had ample opportunities to get to Suarez but left plenty of men on base in crucial situations. They could have easily scored 5 or 6 runs against him but they are not clutch. They are piss poor at the little things...making productive outs with sac flies, etc...when it matters most. When they got down 3-0 on Sunday I really thought that game was over but I watched to the end and was shocked that they held on to win, which was a pleasant surprise. It was a wild ending. When they went to the bottom of the 9th up, 6-4, I told my younger son "I guarantee they find a way to lose this game." Glad I was wrong but it didn't look like I was going to be. We've seen that movie way too many times this season. That said...

I know they are not far out of the last WC but, unless they are at least .500, I can't even entertain that possibility. They are just too inconsistent. At this point, they could ship out every player except for Francisco Alvarez (and maybe Alonso) for all I care. They are just not entertaining and the core sucks and needs to be changed, IMO. I don't ever need to see Jeff McNeil in a Mets uniform ever again. And they can DFA Quintana, too. I don't know what happened to him but he is hot garbage. He at least used to be serviceable. They won Sunday despite him lasting a whopping 3 2/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on a puke-inducing 6 hits and 2 walks. Going into the game he was 1-5 with a 5.17 ERA. He was fortunate to get a no decision. Hit the bricks, pal.

I remember watching that Padres game. It was way before all of these "pay for" regional sports networks. Our cable company in VA carried WOR (Mets), WGN (Cubs), & TBS (Braves). Got to see almost every Mets game. Those were the days. The two things that stood out for me watching the clip of that game were:

1) The old rules where the catcher could just block the entire plate and how the baserunner could just bowl over the catcher, if said backstop were in the way. You had to be tough hombre to wear "the tools of ignorance" back then.

2) The catcher that game was current Mets bench coach John Gibbons. He got annihilated on that play and still managed to hold the ball for the out and get the double play by throwing a dart to third. He was a tough SOB.

Are any of you aware that the Mets haven't lost since the Grimace threw out the first pitch at a game earlier this week?  I wasn't aware that the Grimace was still a thing let alone that he threw out a first pitch recently.

I had the good fortune of attending the game Friday night making me 1-3 in person this year. Mostly a non-descript game, but me and the fam got to the stadium early and had prime viewing during the rain delay. Watching the crew pull the tarp off the field was fascinating. We also got the trumpets when Edwin came in for the save and ultimately he sealed the deal. Good times.

Yeah I think it was Edwin’s first save in a month.  It’s kind of sad I felt ecstatic and relived to see him get the job done Friday night but it is what it is.

I did see that online about Grimace.

Im not deluding myself into thinking we a got a good team this year but the reality is the Mets are only 2.5 games back of the playoffs.  I think there’s a chance a team under .500 makes the playoff cut in the NL this year.

It will be interesting to see what the trade deadline brings - especially after how it was handled last year. We're only a few games out of a playoff spot but we also have the 3rd worst record in the league.
