Bills Hire DJ Mangas as Offensive Assistant

Didn't he just become OC for UB? If true, I guess when Joe becomes head coach DJ will move into the OC spot. Planning ahead?

I hope they look outside the team for the next OC. Brady is on game 3 in his honeymoon phase. He's doing well, but the rest of the season will be harder for the offense with the game tapes rolling in.

Call me crazy, but I'm speculating that Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson had far more to do with Joe Brady's success at LSU than the Assistant Coach sitting with him in the Press Box. Just guessing???

I think that's the likely plan. I'm ok with it for now. Would be interested to see what a full off-season of Brady leading the offense and installing his playbook would look like. But I'm also hoping they do a real search before just handing it over to him. I believe they would still have to meet Rooney Rule criteria before they just name him OC, but not 100% sure if that applies to the interim label.

 

I'm far more concerned with who will be calling the defense next year. To me it feels like we will see an internal promotion, my guess is Eric Washington. But Babich and possibly Al Holcomb may be in the mix there as well.

They had an embarrassment of riches. That being said, bad coaching can certainly restrict a team from reaching it's potential, no matter how talented they are.  We can say that at worst, they at least got the job done, by helping the team reach it's potential.  Also, the early signs with Brady are very encouraging.  After a tough grueling game against a tough KC D, I'm interested in seeing how Brady bounces back against a Dallas team that is humming on both sides of the football. 

We seemed to be struggle against man coverage in the KC game, and I expect we'll see a bit more of that as we move forward. 

 

2nd week in a row, where this offense faces a defensive coordinator who shut down the most potent offense in the history of the NFL to win the SB.

Spagnola last week, who shut down the points shattering (18-0 Pats)

and now Dan Quinn, who shut down the most loaded offense I could remember, the 2013 Broncos.  Held the Broncos to 8pts to win the SB.  I believe Manning threw 55 TD's that year, and over 5500 yds.  Demarius Thomas, Eric Decker, Wes Welker, Julian Thomas, & Knowshon Moreno as the RB. 

 

Baptism by fire.  Let's see what Brady could come up with this week.

I have been expecting this to happen.  Opponents have been game planning to stop Dorsey's offense.  Brady has different tendencies and favorite plays, and DCs figure those things out.  Big test this Sunday against a good Dallas defense.

It is not "stumbled upon" since he was already on roster and Coach McD, for good or bad, has repeated overloaded on experience.

Joe Brady previously had OC experience and was signed as QB coach.

He has done same thing on defense side of ball.

 

Coach McD generally allows OC to handle offense direction not trying to micromanage it as some head coaches do,

  That or he poaches his friend to be part of his coaching staff if he gets a hc gig.

 

  Having Josh Allen as a QB  should give the team the best available oc candidates whenever there is a opening.  So I don't worry too much on who  they hire to be on ataff.  Generally think they get good staff.

Indeed the talent you have available will be the limiting factor in how well your t we am performs but it also can be how well the coaches  prepare the players and get them working together on various plays.

Yeah im not buying this just yet lol. Gonna take DC's gameplanning against what Brady is doing for us to see if he can match it. As others have said, DC's are gameplanning for what they've seen on film to date. But i must say the team hasnt imploded on itself so thats a positive!

 

I think we should play the season out & then evaluate the situation, while keeping an open eye to other coordinators who may become available.

Our team may have moved the ball better after Dorsey left but once again: is a rookie OC really the best option for a team in their "Superbowl window"?

Are we gonna discount this point once again, only to revisit it again in the future when we fire the OC again next time?

Definition of insanity comes to mind lol: trying the same thing but expecting a different result. But hey maybe this time really is different & we really did "luck into the best offensive coordinator situation in the NFL". I mean as BILLS fans we're typically lucky right?

The Buffalo Bills made a smart under-the-radar move to start the week that should only serve to help the offense. 

Buffalo reportedly hired DJ Mangas as an offensive assistant. Most of the time, an offensive assistant hire doesn't move the needle. But Mangas is an interesting addition to the Bills' staff due to his connection to offensive coordinator Joe Brady. 

Mangas and Brady are extremely close. The two played college football together at William & Mary. And more importantly, they were on staff together at LSU during the Tigers' record-breaking season in 2019 that featured monstrous performances from Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson. Mangas sat next to Brady throughout LSU's national championship run. 

Mangas has since served as an assistant with the Carolina Panthers and as the passing game coordinator at LSU. He was most recently the offensive coordinator at the University of Buffalo. 

It's not like the addition of Mangas is suddenly going to take the Bills' offense to a new level. But his addition will allow Brady to be a little more comfortable in his role as Buffalo's offensive coordinator. Continuity on an offensive staff is incredibly important. And having Mangas, who actually officiated Brady's wedding, will provide some of that much-needed continuity.

You are seriously going back 10 years for a comparison.  The Seattle defense that year was lights out regardless who was coaching them.  And to be quite honest Dan Quinn's defense with the Falcons allowed the Pats to come back from a 28-3 deficit to win the Super Bowl after the 2016 season.  I would not be too scared of the Cowboys defense after their performance against Seattle two weeks ago.  

 

We will have a good game plan.  We will play physical on both sides of the ball.  And we have Josh Allen.  Lets go.

I was going to say the same thing. McDermott hired Joe Brady for a reason.

As soon as he was hired, I said “he was hired to be our next OC after Dorsey”, as it seemed obvious that’s why he was hired. I figured he would be groomed to run the Bills offense then take over if Dorsey moved on.

 

and now I almost wonder if McDermott kind of wanted Brady all along.

 

if this ends up being “one of the best offensive coordinator situations in the NFL” (still TBD) I don’t think it’s fair to say the Bills “stumbled” into it.
