The 45th president’s enemies on the right are mustering for a final big money showdown designed to crush his hopes of a third consecutive Republican nomination less than 50 days before voting starts in the GOP primary race.

Nikki Haley will be the lavishly funded vessel carrying the hopes of the influential network funded by billionaire Charles Koch and top industrial and corporate donors who think Donald Trump is a risk too far next November.

Their bet is that the former South Carolina governor can succeed where busted 2016 $100 million front-runner Jeb Bush, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, two impeachments, old school Republicans like Mitt Romney, millions splashed by the Club for Growth and the Lincoln Project and allied groups, a 2020 election defeat, a pliant House GOP majority and several special counsels failed.

Yes, it will fail.

But it's telling that libertarians like the Kochs (or is there really only one of them now?) have put their money behind Haley. I think her instincts are sound, and if the Republican Party is ever going to return to something other than a cult of personality, she would be a good person to start that.

Hmm, I thought that the whole idea is that spending money on speech to influence voters the kind of thing the First Amendment protects. Money is speech and speech is money and the constitution doesn't let us get in the way.

Remember the case I mentioned that opened the floodgates? Citizen's United? The one that said money = speech = protected by the 1st Amendment? Who the hell are "Citizen's United?"

great example of a shady funded PAC effing up DEMOCRACY.  and why our politicians seem to only work for that class anymore.

 

Like this thread shows. That shady money is desperate to highlight the candidate that has very small actual support.  per polling.

Haley is trending up and the influx of cash can only help her.  Whether she can overtake Trump remains to be seen but in NH it's Trump at 44%, Haley at 18%, Christie at 11% and Desantis at 7%.  Should she continue her upward trajectory it's possible she could rise dramatically due to the support of women voters.
