It's mind blowing. The exact same spot on the field over and over and over again, and we never adjusted. Great breakdown by Dan Orlovsky.

 

Kind of off topic, but Dan Orlovsky is the only person on this panel that has a clue. I feel bad for him, putting so much work in while his coworkers make fools of themselves. Take it from me and don't bother watching anything before the time stamp or after 7:30.

Every single accurate QB shreds McDermotts defense. It’s been that way since 2019. It’s plain as day. If you play a QB that even belongs in the nfl, willing to take the easy throws we will get shredded. The only teams we ever stop are the ones that will turn it over. You can basically run on us at will or have guys streaking wide open on every 3rd down. If you can buy an extra second it’s there. What value does this coach have to us? He isn’t even good at his own specialty?

And don't think for a second that coaches like Belichick miss things like that going into games.  

 

Makes one wonder what the breakdown of our first game with NE was like in that regard.

Ugh, the defense is giving up less than 20 pts per game, including last night’s game, ranked 6th in the league.  Yardage wise they’re 10th.  In what’s now a passing league, they’re 7th in the NFL, giving up just over 200 yards passing/game.

Totally agree. He is spot on. And by the way. What the hell is Marcus spears saying about Josh?😡 Did he not watch the game? Idiot. Orlovsky had just said how great Josh played, which he did. I think he runs a good defensive scheme for most of the game (usually) but at the end of close games he needs to figure something else out, it’s too easy. Make the QB have to throw it over our CBs heads occasionally, it’s a much tougher throw, but whatever McD is the defensive genius 🙄

Yes a lot of that was due to playing some bad offenses and QBs. Look at how they did against the Eagles, Bengals with Burrow and the Jaguars. The defense gave up more than 20 points in each of those games and struggled. 

 

It's the same thing every season. The defense looks great during the regular season as they play a mix of good and bad teams. When the playoffs start and play good offenses they struggle.

The problem is 80% of the points we give up are in the 2nd half.  Throw in that ridiculous incessant zone McDermott has always used, and we don't stand a chance.

If I had to guess, I think that catch and run by tyreek hill in the 13 seconds game (right before the final Davis TD) has given McDoormat PTSD. Ever since then he is so terrified of giving up a long TD that he concedes yards at the ends of close games to the point where he's willing to give up a field goal attempt and take his chances. Granted, yesterday's kick was borderline miraculous, but it still shouldn't have gotten to that point.

Marcus Spears still mad Josh turned out to be the better QB of the 2018 class.  Lots of those analysts still on Lamar’s nuts.

His defense is predicated on making a team take the short stuff all game in hopes they eventually make a mistake.  Odds say that a mistake will happen.  The problem shows itself in the playoffs because elite QBs dont make many mistakes.  It shows itself at the end of games because its based on mistakes throughout the course of a game and not just in an individual drive. 

 

It works when the offense is blowing the other team out.  Not so much when its a close game as you can see in McDs record.  It only takes one mistake free drive in a close game. 

 

Even look at the playoffs.  Colts game... we won because they turned the ball over after marching the entire field.  If not for that mistake its a loss.  Ravens game... we won because Lamar turned the ball over in the endzone and it became a pick 6 then Lamar was knocked out of the game. 

 

This defense isn't made to make plays.  It's made to take advantage of the other team making a mistake.  It's covered up by one of two things... our offense is insane and blowing the other team out or the other team makes a mistake and turns the ball over.  Lastly, the other team is just playing like crap and dropping wide open passes.  Good teams sit in the big zone holes and complete easy passes all game long.  A year or two ago that was ok because our team could fly to the ball and gang tackle.  Now they are old and slow and half the time can't tackle either.

 

The D did a great job against Philly in the first half.  Philly made adjustments in the second half and McD didn't.  Par for the course.

Not sure I agree with this. They were covering up the short passes just fine up until late in the game. Orlovsky makes a valid point here.

 

The biggest adjustment Philly made in the second half was getting those stretch runs working. That opened up the deeper shots to Smith.

It's basically the same thing we had going on before McDermott took over. The defense is great spread out over the average. The problem is when you need a great defense to make a stand you don't have it. Part of that is we don't have a Bruce Smith, we no longer have a healthy Von Miller. The other part of that is the coaching philosophy that falls apart when you need it the most.
