TheBrownBear Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 It's a completed catch under high school rules (I think). Quote

LeGOATski Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Based on the pictures, that's an interception. It looks like the receiver never has full control of the ball. Quote
Stenbar Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 In NYS High School Football once the player hits the ground the play is dead. The decision would be if they call it a catch or not. Quote
Matt_In_NH Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Lots of missing details. What are the catch rules in NH high school football? Did he have possession? Ground can’t cause a fumble but what part of his body hit the ground? Quote
frostbitmic Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 I'd need to review this through 5 different angles, I'm certain that a HS football championship would have plenty of cameras. Quote

If the ball is loose before he "survives the ground", then it can't be down by contact or a fumble. So it has to be interception or incomplete. But it's not incomplete. Ball never touched the ground. Interception! ultimately, I don’t know the college rule but in the pros it’s an interception as described. the only alternative is he survived the fall and was technically down before the ball pops out. BigAl2526 Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 If the receiver did not make a football move, completing the reception, then it's an interception regardless of whether a defensive player touched him. Quote
Orlando Buffalo Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 In high school, at least in FL, once down the play is done, no contact needed. If it was a catch he is down. Quote

There doesn't seem to be a time element at all for a completed catch and down by contact with ground. With no element of time and the ball never touching the ground I would rule as an interception. I see you’ve been paying attention to the broadcast refs in the past week. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard this mention of ‘time element’ before but have now heard it several times in the last week. Quote
ChrisWatson#21 Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 What annoys me was Sutton was given instant possesion a few weeks ago in the in the endzone vs Denver but today Brown wasn’t given instant possesion after catching it CLEARLY with both hands. NFL is a joke. Quote

But I'm interested in how everyone here would call this if they were the official. A pass hits a receiver on the hands. Both hands remain on the ball as the player goes to the ground, but the ball jars loose when the receiver hits the ground. The ball pops up and never hits the ground before it's grabbed by a defender. Is it a) a catch or b) an interception? Should be a catch Quote
PromoTheRobot Posted November 27, 2023 Author Posted November 27, 2023 The embargo has been lifted and I can share the clip above. Quote
