Pass Rush is Feasting This Year

So historically under McD/Frazier the pass rush has been... anemic. 

 

Between 2017 and 2022 our sack totals finished as: 27 (yikes!), 36, 44, 38, 42, 40

 

We now sit currently at 39, good for second in the league behind only the Ravens, with still six games to go. 

 

Individually, Leonard Floyd has been a phenom. One of my fave off-season moves of the McBeane regime, he's sitting with 9.5 on the season after last night's sack banquet. 

 

Fun fact: no Bills player has recorded 10 or more sacks since this regime took over. Closest was Jordan Philips in 2018 who finished with, coincidentally, 9.5

 

Of all the criticisms McD might face lately, there's no doubt he has definitely elevated the pass rush since taking over coordinator duties from Frazier. Might we finally have a double-digit sack artist under this regime? No matter how you slice it, the defense is getting to the QB better than they have in over half a decade. It's great to see!

Yep. Von Miller has been a damn beast

Sure would have liked to see a sack or two on the last drives of Mac Jones and Russell Wilson....

 

But yes, they have been much more aggressive this year.

To think we'd be second in the league in sacks through week 11 while Von has been a complete ghost in the stat column all year.

I'm fascinated - averaging 40 sacks per year for the previous 5 seasons is "anemic"???

 

IIRC we have also trended near the top of the league in pressures and/or pass rush win rate as well

 

McDermott's defenses certainly have had their share of challenges, especially in big spots.  

But I wouldn't necessarily characterize getting sacks as one of them

With injuries piling up in the secondary this pass rush is going to have to be perfect the next 2 weeks and going forward.

40 sacks last year put us at 15th in the league. 

 

Maybe "mediocre" then is a better word. Situationally, it felt like when we needed it, it was nowhere to be found.

McD/Frazier's Bills have never finished top ten in sacks as a team and never produced a single double digit sack player to this point. 

 

Again, "mediocre" is probably a better word there. Anecdotally, they disappointed in key situations, like in several playoff exits. 

 

The #1 and #2 teams in the NFL in sacks last year were the Chiefs and the Eagles. I'm encouraged by the change I'm seeing this year 🤷‍♂️

Yes, if Von can get it together... LOOOK OUT! His speed off the line is getting better. He just needs to make the cut towards the QB. His power is there too. C'mon Von, bang the gong!

Getting a reasonable replacement for Daquan in there has helped. The drop off was significant between the Dolphins and Bengals game, hopefully not enough to keep a dangerous team out of the playoffs.

Kinda misleading. 20 sacks have come in 3 games (two jests, 1 Washington). That means we have 19 in 8.  Still solid but definitely inflated by those outlier games.

I'm sure plenty of teams get more sacks against bad teams that's just how seasons go, point is they're still getting pressure and a few in other games.

Every team with high sack totals for the entire history of the league has had their numbers inflated by outlier games. Lotta teams never have any outlier games, which isn't where you want to be.
