Surfmeister Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 Because of my job I travel too much. Last week I caught pneumonia on the road for the first time in my life. I’ve been to the doctor several times. I’ve had the antibiotic shot in my rear for three days in a row. Even the nurses are afraid of those shots. Now I’m on pill form antibiotics, cough syrup, cough pills and eye drops and I still feel awful. What is the home remedy that is going to make me feel better? Is it vinegar, honey and lemon? I know one of you must know. Thanks ~

Viral, bacterial, or mycoplasma ("walking" pneumonia - a term I hate). I had mycoplasma pneumonia last October, it sucked, to put it bluntly...and that's the mild kind...

I don't know if this is correct but they said if it is viral the antibiotics can't treat it. Thanks for your reply.
Astrobot Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 Get the mucus moving. Drink tons of water. Take Mucinex (over the counter, time release Guaifenesin that's 8x the active ingredient in Robitussin) morning and night. Take a long shower day and night.

It seemed to help when I took a trip to Europe and had to sleep on the plane. I think sitting up helped. It certainly was tough waking up every morning with all that shifting in your lungs. For at least three weeks after I would have said I was ok, I was still coughing up crap. Odd thing is, every time I got a cold since then, it always ends with my lungs getting terribly congested. Anyone else that has had pneumonia have that same problem?
Dwight Drane Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 Don't overdo the cough syrup because you want to cough to get it all up. I had it pretty bad and used a steady diet of Gatorade and Liptons Noodle soup...the real tiny noodles. I would just inhale over the bowl for 10 minutes to get loose. It was like a cross between a horror movie and a fireworks show to hear myself breathe.

Thanks for your reply. 352383[/snapback] Antibiotics don't target viruses, that is true. Another thing others mentioned here: fluids. Stay well hydrated, it keeps the crap in your lungs from getting too thick and makes it easier to cough it out. "Easier" being a relative term, of course.

Surfmeister Posted June 7, 2005 Author Posted June 7, 2005 Thanks, man - they did give me Mucinex, so it's good to hear you say to take it. I take 2 in the morning, and 2 again at night.
Surfmeister Posted June 7, 2005 Author Posted June 7, 2005 I'll be happy if it's another 15 years before I get this again. Thanks for chiming in - it helps to know some day I will stop coughing...
Surfmeister Posted June 7, 2005 Author Posted June 7, 2005 Really good advice - thanks. I won't overdo the cough syrup because I don't like it in the first place. I've been eating lots of soup, too.
Surfmeister Posted June 7, 2005 Author Posted June 7, 2005 You mindreader -- that's just how I feel! Thanks for the good wishes.
Ramius Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 I had walking pneumonia a few years ago...they told me to basically just not do anything at all, and drink a ton of fluids... and thats true, antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, not virals...there are very few antivirals on the market and they are some fairly violent drugs...
