Personally I feel like having a guy who might not be able to catch because of a broken hand be on the field in critical fourth and two situation is beyond bad coaching. It is coaching malpractice.

First thing I thought of when I heard that he was getting surgery.

Absolutely insane.

He has always had some drops, but it is very possible the issues recently are related to the injury, I give him the benefit of the doubt.  However, I personally question signing him to the extension he got.   But also know he would be getting paid the same amount or more elsewhere if he was an FA.

I dunno man, he has made some big red zone TD catches for us...to beat the Chiefs last year, playoff games...think he scored TDs in like 6 straight games last year. People acting like he is some JAG are pretty far off base I think.

Here's my gripe about Knox. It's not even Knox himself (who I do like) but rather the double standards by a large group of the fan base.

People making excuses for him now with the wrist. Ok cool. He's never been a high catch percentage guy. He's tough. He's a nice blocker and does a lot of little things. However looking at his pricetag and what he counts against the cap being slightly above JAG isn't good enough.

Meanwhile you look at Gave Davis. Another low catch percentage guy with a history of drops. Played all last year on a bum ankle...yet held to much higher standards with a much lower cost. He's almost the WR version of Knox.

A though exercise. Which of the players am I describing here:

-Plays hurt

-Standout blocker

-Low catch percentage

-Long history of drops

-TD producer

-Has an occasional big game then disappears for long stretches

-High snap count with low target share

But one is beloved and the other is constantly bashed.

Lots of folks have been killing Knox for his poor hands this season.

Now that we know he has been basically playing with a wrist injury since the Jags game (and I suspect his ineffectiveness to play through it has contributed to them deciding to do surgery), is he no longer a persona non grata on TBD?

Yes didn’t you read Joe Marino it was all Allen’s fault he knew Dawson had a wrist injury and didn’t throw it hard enough to stick it in his Facemask on 4th down

Awww you sound so upset that someone thinks the QB didn’t play perfect.

It’s gonna be okay little guy

He actually HAS been a pretty high percentage catch guy the last 2 seasons, that's my whole point!  The first 2 years, it was low 50% area.  The last 2 years has been at 69% and 73.5%.  That's Kelce, Kittle, Andrews, etc territory and in some years better than them.  People keep trying to say he drops the ball but they simply are maintaining an initial bias from their first opinion of him that no longer exists.  This would be like people saying Allen doesn't complete a high percentage of his passes and isn't very accurate based on his first 2 years.

he dropped a couple of balls, which happens

However, he has a history here of making plays, which is why he earned the contract.

The bigger issue is that he is yet another player that seems to disappear for weeks at a time in this offensive scheme.

On this roster he’s a luxury.  He’s not a JAG, but he’s not what I would characterize as a reliable or game-breaking receiver.  Maybe he’s an enforcer-type.  It’s hard to know if he’s that guy unless you’re on the field or maybe at the game itself.  So perhaps there’s some value there.  But that player is not where that money should be spent.

Here is what I will say about Knox...he gets more heat than he should around here.  He has had the highest catch rate on the team, better than Diggs prior to this year.

The issue with Knox is sometimes when he doesn't make the play its been one that hurt and those resonate more and leave a bigger impression.  But overall, hes been a very good TE and is someone who should have been even more involved in our passing offense the past 2 years, but the poor OL situation didn't help as he is often had to be used as an extra blocker to mask those deficiencies more.

So IMHO, I think he deserves a little bit of the benefit of the doubt here as he has shown he has been a more reliable pass catcher prior to this year and this injury.

Knox is an interesting case study. From a catching perspective he was below replacement level his first 2 seasons. Then in years 3 and 4 he improved dramatically to being one of the best in the league. I really thought he had worked the drops out of his system.

Now in year 5 he's back to being as bad (or even worse) as he was earlier in his career. He leads the league in TE drops despite not having many targets. Can we blame his poor performance this season on the injury? Is the 'real' Dawson Knox the guy we saw in years 1+2 that couldn't hold onto the ball? Is this just bad luck from a small sample size?

This would be like if Allen suddenly dropped back to a sub 60% completion rate.

I would suspect the wrist played a lot into that and is why he is shutting it down for surgery.

Knox is a very good blocker, but for whatever reason is never a consistent option in the pass game.  Not just drops, but low target share.  Not just this season but years past.

He's one tough dude, ie: Rambo, but he's always battling through an injury it seems.  Same as college.  His biggest challenge is staying healthy for long stretches.

Always a fan and up to this point, good value.  But starting next yr, $14.4m cap hit (6th highest amongst TEs) will really sting us.  I'll be genuinely shocked if we try restructuring his deal....not the type to do it for/injury concerns.  $15m+ cao hits in 2025-26 already.

No way of getting out of that contract, without $20m+ dead cap until 2025.

Hopefully he come back healthy and balls out next year.  We will need it for that cap hit

2 things are true:  Knox is overpaid, and he's also valuable to the offense.

I wonder if he'd get so much heat form the fans if not overpaid. As if he'd pass on a juicy contract. Blame Beane and crew, not Knox!  Just like I couldn't understand all the "we picked the wrong Josh" crowd hating on JA17. Again, blame the GM/HC, not the player, and root for him to succeed as he is a Bills now!

Playing with a bad wrist, no wonder he dropped passes - and that was a known factor BTW. Though I didn't think it was so bad he'd need surgery. The issue is that he has dropped some passes before too.

Shakir and Morris should step into his snaps. I really like what I have seen from Shakir so far. He catches everything thrown to him, he runs crisp routes and he has an improved on his blocking. No reason he shouldn’t see 35 snaps a game with Morris taking about 25
