Dr. K Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 (edited) Part of this is the number of injuries they have suffered, but I think there are signs that the Bills will be significantly younger going forward. Consider the following players who are starting or playing significant snaps right now: Damian Williams--rookie O'Cyrus Torrance--rookie Dalton Kincaid--rookie Christian Benford--2nd year Terrel Bernard--2nd year James Cook--2nd year Kaiir Elam--2nd year Greg Rousseau--3rd year Spencer Brown--3rd year Plus others who are coming along: Quintin Morris--2nd year Khalil Shakir--2nd year Ryan Van Demark--rookie Alec Anderson--rookie Kingsley Jonathan--2nd year Now we may have doubts about players like Brown and Elam, for sure, and some of these guys have not seen the field much, but at least some and probably many of them are going to be the regulars after this season. The team seems to me to be investing in younger backups to mix with the older retreads and free agents with an eye toward them taking bigger roles in future. Of course all teams do this, but it does suggest the Bills are trying to stay relevant for the long haul. Edited October 16, 2023 by Dr. K 5 2 Quote
Success Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 This is what will need to happen to sustain success while we have Allen. It's a good sign. Beane is hitting on a lot of draft picks now, imo. 3 Quote
RoyBatty is alive Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I am ready to consider scratching Kaiir Elam off the list. 2 Quote
MAJBobby Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 well not really they seem pretty stable based on AVG Age 2018 - 26.7 (28th youngest) 2019 - 26.3 (26th youngest) 2020 - 26.1 (23d youngest) 2021 - 26.3 (24th Youngest) 2022 - 26.5 (27th youngest) 2023 - 26.11 (29th youngest) So seems they are one of the older teams yearly actually. 1 1 Quote

Yes, if you take the age of the entire roster this is true. You're missing my point. I'm talking about the age of the starters, and going forward after this season. 1 1 Quote

So is Josh and so is Diggs and so is Poyer and so is Hyde and so is Von. 1 Quote

They are. What has happened is just that injuries to some of their experienced vets - particularly Tre and Milano - have meant younger guys starting. That's it really. 1 Quote

There's barely a difference between the oldest teams and the youngest teams. It is a complete non-issue in the NFL. Quote

Here are REALLY big contributors / starters that you list will not touch to take a spot from and thier ages are this year Vonn Miller - 34 will still be here with Cap hit Poyer - 32 Diggs - 30 Dawkins - 29 Morse - 31 Hyde - 32 Tre 28 - (knee and achilles) Milano - 28 Taron Johnson - 27 Dane Jackson - 27 DaQuan Jones - 32 Jordan Phillips - 31 Leonard Floyd - 31 So they really are not getting younger they are treading water, as they will continue to be. 3 minutes ago, MJS said: There's barely a difference between the oldest teams and the youngest teams. Von, Hyde and Poyer dramatically skew this number. -Cook -Kincaid -Torrence -McGovern -Bates -Oliver -Rousseau -Epenesa -Bernard -Williams -Benford All young players, who - outside of AJE - ae locked down for multiple years. If we do what I think we may this offseason, which is cycle out Gabe, Tre, Hyde and Poyer.. to be replaced with a rookies/younger players.. all of a sudden we are much younger. This was always going to change once Allen's cap hit starting becoming something we had to deal with financially. 2 Quote

I'm not convinced that Poyer, Hyde and White will be starting at the beginning of next season, or at the end of it (though it's hard to say that the replacements for the two safeties are on the team right now). White's not over the hill in years but the two major injuries make him suspect. Morse is no kid either and they've been grooming Bates to be his replacement. We have yet to see how much Miller has left in the tank; he may recede to "elder statesman" among the pass rushers next year, with many fewer snaps. The others you list are good bets if they aren't hurt. Edited October 16, 2023 by Dr. K Quote

Chaos Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 Contract years remaining for current starters under 30 is probably the most relevant way to look at team stability. Mean age is problematic for a variety of reasons. One example is having a 20 year old under a four you contract and a 32 year old under a four year contract, means you have two players with an average age of 26, with an average of four years remaining. This means zero prime years for most positions. And much different than having two 26 years olds under contract for four years, means you have two guys locked up for their peak years. Quote
