there is a close to zero chance the offense plays as well as they did during the end of 2021 and wasn't even enough to get them out of the divisional round

Oh God, now I'm depressed again

Patrick Mahomes won two Super Bowl with a KC defense at the bottom 10. Bills can win it all as long as Josh Allen doesn't get injured. Bills opponent can score all they want against our dog *****  defense but in the end the  Bills will score more. B-)

What is our base/default identity as an offense? What do we do well every time that no one else can do or stop? What should we fall back on when the Offense needs a spark to get going?

Answer: Run Josh.

Running Josh tips the numbers game in our favor. The defense cant cover everyone AND Josh. When nothing else is working, running game is getting blown up, can't even get the ball to Diggs... Dorsey MUST simplify to our default and turn Josh loose. If for no other reason than to give the Defense something else to respect and think about in order to open it up for other guys.

Call a couple of designed QB runs AND a couple of passes that clear out the underneath and let Josh run in space. After a couple of those plays the Defense wont know what's coming next.

Well that will piss off some people (those that want Josh on a leash).

Was watching a little Mahomes Sunday and when there is pressure and he elides a tackler, all bets are off as he can scramble.

Josh is better, but you can see he's been told not to.  Put a spy on him and a receiver comes open, don't and he has room to run.

Not with the Dorsey dink and dunk approach they won't.

The dink and dunk approach is when our Offense looks dominant as against Raiders/WFT/Dolphins. Get the ball out quick to open guys underneath and let them go for 5-10 yards. Maybe they break one, but you keep the chains moving either way. The old Patriot way.

Where the problems come in is when we go to "the Dorsey Special" which is "if the Defense shows a certain look, then go deep". And that usually results in deep miss, deep drop, sack, punt. Maybe an INT in there that everyone excuses as a punt. Wonderful.

Let's blame Allen again.....  Geez this get's old.  The second play vs. Jax says it all, a 2 yard pass short of the sticks.  A wasted play and part of the KD arsenal.  Yes sometimes it does work, but you could tell early that the run, short pass, short pass was wrong against Jax and their formation.

All Allen needs is the edge to run for two yards.

The Bills already too have 4 Ints on balls thrown over 50 yards.  No other team has more then one.

It's on Dorsey to call plays and scheme to open up that short game, or if the Defense is selling out on stopping that - finding what they are leaving open and exploiting it.

If that is running Josh, then mount up.

As expected, I don't disagree.

This may be the year the Bills need Allen to go scorched earth

During the Bills’ four-year postseason run from 2019 to 2022, one of their staples has been a good-to-excellent defense in the regular season that can rescue the offense at any point. We even saw that against the Jets and early against the Commanders. But now, with multiple significant injuries to their defense, it’s potentially setting up as a year unlike any of the four previous ones. Outside of nickel cornerback Taron Johnson, question marks are everywhere on the back seven and the defensive interior against the run. It all could point to this being the year franchise quarterback Josh Allen has to go nuclear for the Bills to reach their goals. Outside of his Week 1 implosion against the Jets, Allen has played at an MVP level. He was dominant against the Raiders and Dolphins, and shook off a slightly slow start against the Commanders to have another excellent game. The Bills looked asleep at the wheel early in the Jaguars game, though that’s something I’ll be diving into when the All-22 comes out Tuesday.

All of that was mostly without Allen drifting back into his college tendencies of not knowing the line between calculated risk and reckless. But should the defense have some difficulty limiting the opponent as their losses would indicate, this is an opportunity for Allen to hit a career marker in what is setting up to be the greatest quarterbacking season in franchise history. Allen, along with receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, have shown the potential to be prolific on a weekly basis. But they’ve been able to dial it back with games well in hand in three of their first five games. Plus in past seasons, they’ve been able to escape a down game based on the strength of their defense. That luxury may not be as prevalent against the many average-to-good teams they’ll face as their schedule gets much tougher, very soon. They’ll still have some of those blowouts against the lower-tier teams like the Giants, but once Week 9 hits with a trip to Cincinnati, those will likely be far and few between.

If you’re a glass half full kind of person, should Milano and Jones be lost for a considerable amount of time, it could set the Bills up for the type of football they’ll need to play to advance in the postseason. Their most realistic chance of winning the Super Bowl came in 2021 when the offense was unstoppable and playing a mostly perfect game in one way or another over the season’s final month. For the Bills to accomplish their postseason goals, perhaps Allen needing to be the guy every week will be the ultimate catalyst for them in the postseason. Or, if Allen puts too much pressure on himself, it could lead to more reckless decisions with the ball and some in-game implosions and losses, but that’s the worst-case scenario. Either way, we may see Allen pressed in a way he’s never been before in 2023.

No. Allen was not the reason the Bills lost to the Jags. He played well and there was not much more. He could’ve done. The loss was not on the defense either. Allen needs more help on the field and in the OC’s booth. Diggs showed up. Davis and Harty did their jobs too. Beyond that, Dorsey and the offense sucked out loud.

I half agree.

I truly believe the coaching staff needs to be able to be able to press the on and off switch for Allen going Hero mode.

Allen is playing superbly taking what the defense gives him. If it were up to him he would abandon that as soon as he could.

My issue is that the coaching staff is completely clueless in getting a feel for a game. McDermott/Dorsey did not have any feel for that game AT ALL. The offense should have been much more aggressive much EARLIER than Allen practically scoring a TD in 45 seconds because he was angry.

Not a knock on Dorsey.

But there are enough Tools in the within the Offense to have Josh just keep playing smart. Change up the game plan from week to week and from half to half if needed. And allow Josh (as they have ) check out of plays.

Work on lengthy TOP and ball control , spread them wide then run them deep

Use the tools you have an NO Hero ball needed.

Josh has really matured and lets keep it that way.

 But yea

The offense will likely need to carry the offense a bit more this season. agreed

I like the thought and firmly believe that Josh has it in him to go Nuclear. I really hope it happens. Could see him taking this league by the horns and exacting his will on everyone while leading this team to victory. He defiantly has it in him. If that happens is another story.

in that case ? He better save it for the divisional title and sb. Not to carry the team to that place.

Smart play calling should rule the day.

And McD defense will need to adjust. and will i feel.

Hit the nail on the head,, but that is the issue.  There were plays there early in the game, but the OC did nothing to help Allen and by the time Allen said "f" it, it was too late.

I absolutely disagree. The Bills need to simply play disciples football where JA can occasionally work his magic.  The Bills are not without depth and the opportunity to win many more games this season.

Where JA does need to be “special” is in the playoffs.

Sanity from the sane. Thank you

Playcalling ruling the day has almost never been a thing with McD or Dorsey. So we’ll see how that goes.

I understand your argument about saving it for when it matters most. But if Josh doesn’t go scorched earth at some point during the season, we might not make the playoffs.

They may need him to. Each season is unique. This year has already been beset by the injury bug on defense. If Josh needs to resort to more Super Josh type plays then so be it. The goal is to win it all, whatever that requires.

And KC is not the KC of 2021. Past years are just not indicative of this seasons outcome.

I read that here last year as well.....

Until he starts throwing picks and everyone reverts back to:  "Sugar high Josh needs to stop playing hero ball".

My thoughts:  the defense isn't going to be improved this year.  Even the signing of Surtain isn't getting us back to where we were.   Bring in serviceable replacements (see: Norman) and roll.

You will need the offense to score more to make up for the defense presumably giving up more points (hope i'm wrong).  Beane needs to bring another piece in.   Perhaps a top receiver to be a second.  Issue is what assets do we have?    I would look to Epinesa, Elam, and Shakir as trade bait.   Picks as well.

This team will need to gut a bit and rebuild going into the second phase of Allen's career.  We are definitely in a window right now and WON'T be in the upcoming few seasons imo because of that.   Time to strike now.

I mean with Dorsey calling the plays, he can only do so much. It's just mind boggling how Dorsey didn’t adjust his play calling vs the Jags. Doesn't Dorsey have a MS Surface up in the box, like they players do on the sideline, where he could have been reviewing the failed plays during the game, and then make adjustments? He had plenty of time during the game, as the Jags had the ball for most of the game. Then there's always the 15 minutes at halftime too.

Don't you remember him tossing it last year, when we lost. They are not willing to give him another!

Keep him healthy. Let him perfect the play action pass. And taking what the D gives. The only time I want him running now is goal line or when a play breaks down. Hate the designed runs on the wrong side of the field. When we make it to the playoffs. Then he has free reign.
