I thought you were isolationist.  Or at least anti war.  What happened?

And after a salient, interesting, noninflammatory video, Callahan adds to the discussion with....wait for it....an eyeroll

if used as a deterrent...we had them available for Afghanistan and Vietnam right?

Are you surprised? It's not as if this sentiment didn't exist prior to 1947. It's codified in religious texts. If these people really cared about the oppressed why aren't they out protesting the Chinese treatment of Muslims?

Wa-Po with the update. No use of the word terror or terrorism.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/what-to-know-about-the-hostages-taken-from-israel-in-hamas-attack/ar-AA1hZ1TZ

Hamas, the militant group that invaded Israel in a surprise attack Saturday, killed and captured people after an unprecedented infiltration into the south of the country. Now, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip is threatening to execute hostages — and broadcast the executions to the world — if Israel carries out retaliatory strikes on homes in the Palestinian territory without warning.

Many hostages were taken from the Tribe of Nova music festival near Kibbutz Reim, near eastern Gaza. Other hostages were taken from border towns in southern Israel.

How a night of dancing and revelry in Israel turned into a massacre

Hamas, during its initial incursion, also captured and held people within Israel as fighting was underway around the border towns.

The spokesperson for Hamas’s military wing, who goes by the name Abu Obaida, said in a message broadcast by Al Jazeera on Monday that the scale of Israel’s retaliatory strikes on residential buildings in the Gaza Strip forced the militant group to reverse its previous commitment to keep prisoners and hostages alive.

Gaza reels from Israeli airstrikes and braces for all-out war

“We, in the past hours, have swallowed the pain of what happened to many families throughout the Gaza Strip,” Abu Obaida said. “We have decided to put an end to this. From this moment on, we announce that every targeting of our people who are safe in their houses, without prior warning, we will regrettably meet with the execution of one of the enemy’s civilian hostages that we have. And we will have to broadcast that audio and visually.

Hamas has said a cessation in fighting is a precondition to any negotiations over the hostages’ release. “We will not exchange or negotiate on the file of the hostages while under fire, during aggression and battle,” Abu Obaida said Monday in his recording. “The hostage situation is a strategic file that has its own clear and known path, and its price will be paid by the occupation, there is no question about it.

you don't negotiate with terrorist.

Sieges violate international law, U.N. rights chief warns

By Victoria Bisset

 and

Amar Nadhir

Israel’s “full siege” of the Gaza Strip is prohibited under international law, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, said Tuesday. An independent U.N. commission said there was “already clear evidence” of possible war crimes since the violence began.

“We are faced with an explosive powder keg situation,” Türk said in a news release. “We know how this plays out, time and time again — the loss of Israeli and Palestinian lives and incalculable suffering inflicted on both communities.”

“The imposition of sieges that endanger the lives of civilians by depriving them of goods essential for their survival is prohibited under international humanitarian law,” Türk said of Israel’s imposition of a siege of Gaza, which Israel’s defense minister said Monday would involve “no electricity, no food, no fuel.”

He also stressed the importance of sparing civilian populations from harm and condemned the reports of summary executions of civilians and mass killings by Palestinian militants, as well as hostage-taking.

Separately on Tuesday, the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, said that reports of civilian hostages and using civilians as human shields are war crimes. The imposition of a full siege “will undoubtfully cost civilian lives and constitutes collective punishment,” the commission said.

I mean, it’s a tool. It can be used for good things or bad things.

A carrier strike group has more firepower than many nations.

But they are also logistical marvels and are used in humanitarian missions. You basically have a floating hospital and power plant with professionally trained personnel.

Having a carrier group off the coast of a troubled area allows for a safe and stable base of humanitarian relief efforts, in addition to its offensive and/or power projection functions.

I think some did.  Some didn't.  Some were in between - less than hate, more than like.

agreed.  for those purposes.  and I pray that the carrier going to Iran will provide those things only.   It's not ridiculous to hypothesize that this could turn into a world war quickly.  And while hamas deserves plenty of blame and condemnation, they're not the ones actually pulling the strings.  They're more like the goons of Jan6.  "Useful" idiots as NC says....

Yes.

Look at the history of Jews in the ME for more than 30 seconds and you'll see.

I don't think the continued settlements are defensible.

With that being said the Palestinians and their nation state sponsors like Iran don't want a two state solution which at this point in history is the only viable option. Their stated goal is the destruction of Israel.

Did Mexico pay for it?

The massive, complex attack on Israel on Saturday by militants from the Gaza Strip stunned Israelis, who watched in horror as fighters easily bypassed one of the world’s most advanced security systems.

The “smart fence” is equipped with cutting-edge technology, designed to detect any security breach. Here’s how the militants got through.

Agreed.  So will destroying Iran fix it?  I'm seriously asking cuz it didn't work out so well in Iraq and Afghanistan...

So both sides have grievances. Israel just bought more influence. The longer this drags on, the more it hurts Israel, IMO

Hamas and the Military Logic of Sexual Violence

Substack, by Chris Bray

Hamas broke through a fortified border, had unchallenged freedom of movement inside Israel for a shockingly long time, and attacked….a dance music festival and some kibbutzim.

Not airfields, not fuel depots, not power stations, not army motor pools to deny mobility to the enemy. They went after soft targets first, and focused especially on women and children. Eyewitness reports and footage of female hostages are telling us that Hamas engaged in sustained sexual violence, and took care to make it known.

(Snip)

The sexually traumatized bodies of women represent an extremely deliberate and calculated adoption, explicitly planned for months or years, of the familiar tools of ethnic cleansing.
