oldmanfan Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Damn. One of the best, if not the best, ever LBs to play the game. And his Lite Beer commercials with Bubba are classics. 6 1 Quote

Mark Vader Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Saw him on many a NFL Films presentation. RIP to one of the greats. Quote
billsbackto81 Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 The name exemplifies toughness. True legend of the game. Question? Who here is old enough to remember Dick Butkus and Larry Csonka making an appearance on the Six Million Dollar Man back in the 70's? 😁 Great memories as a kid watching stuff like that. 5 Quote
Returntoglory Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Wow. Hurts my heart. Such an icon. Rest in Peace Mr. Butkus ❤️ 1 Quote
AlCowlingsTaxiService Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Grew up in Chicago and saw him play in ‘72 or ‘73 … his final seasons with Da Bears. I was a kid and wend with my dad. If I can’t get the prime lockers at the gym, I always shoot for locker #51 … he personified the way I envision the position. RIP 2 1 Quote
Shaw66 Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Butkus was amazing. The Bears drafted Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers in the first round of the same draft! Hard to imagine any team having a better first round, ever. Butkus was quoted in Sports Illustrated as saying, "If I was smart, I'd be a doctor. But I ain't, so I'm a football player." After football, he had a semi-successful career as a celebrity, doing ads and personal appearances. I think it was another Sports Illustrated story about him that said he did an appearance one time, and the promoter didn't pay him at the appearance. After a little time, Butkus called him, and the guy said, "Yeah, I'll get it to you." Another call, another brush off. One day Butkus walked into the guy's office, unannounced, walked behind his desk, grabbed the guy by the neck, stood him up, and walked him outside. Butkus made him get into a car, and they drove to the guy's bank, where Butkus made the guy take the money out of the bank that Butkus owned. He was his own collection agency, and when Butkus said it was time to get paid, you knew it was time! 1 2 Quote

Chandler#81 Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 (edited) As a kid in the 60’s, I idolized him and followed his entire career. He truly was a legend. BillsPride12 Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Used to watch a ton of NFL Films videos on Dick Butkus when I was growing up and learning the history of the game. Truly one of the most iconic players in NFL history. Will be missed by not only Bears fans but NFL Fans as a whole RIP #51 Quote
