Beat: Performing the music of 80s King Crimson

$200 for Meet and greet VIP.  I might do that when they're in my area.    I'd love to meet Danny Carey

2 Zappa guitar alumni in the same room... that would be hard to turn down.

What are your thoughts on cover bands?  There is a Supertramp cover band coming through my area, and as seeing they have not toured in years, and it's a group I would want to see, I'm considering going.

I have learned to embrace tribute bands more over the past few years.

I’ve seen a couple great Beatles tributes, an excellent Queen tribute, Billy Joel and Traffic (one of my favorites) as well.

Bands line Brit and Aussie Floyd are playing major venues now.

I did spring ($) to see Aussie Floyd many years ago in Albany and have no regrets.

For the Supertramp tribute, is it a touring act with musicians who have resumes?  Or it is a local-ish group of musicians (we’ve got a local group of musicians who put on tribute shows - but they charge way too much ($40) than I’m willing to pay for a bunch of local guys) ?

This is one page I found of theirs...

Dreamer - The Supertramp Experience - Tribute Band Toronto, ON - The Bash

I'm on the fence about going. It's at one of the local casinos. Tickets would be $30-$45 depending on where I sit.  It's not sold out, so I could probably even wait till day of to decide.

There is a band that tours the country called "Steely Dead." If you like Steely Dan and the Grateful Dead, these guys are great.

Seems like a pretty legit tribute. Probably some YouTube footage of them.

That price range for a very good tribute band really isn’t bad.

Love tribute bands!   The local casino has a tribute band every Thursday all summer (free).  Great bands too.   I'll go see the more difficult tribute bands like Rush and Tool to see the musicianship.   Im also the drummer in a Van Halen tribute band.

Rock & Roll is becoming like classical music in that respect. Seeing bands perform original compositions. The only difference is we all heard the originals. No one alive heard what Beethoven wanted his 5th Symphony to sound like.

Went to see Sammy Hagar at SPAC (Saratoga Springs, NY) last night.

Sammy Hagar

Michael Anthony

Joe Satriani

Jason Bonham

Primarily Van Halen tunes from the DLR and Hagar eras. A little Sammy, a little Montrose and one Satriani tune.

Hagar is 76-years-old and man, he doesn’t look, sound or act it.

His voice is showing signs of age, but not horribly. He can still belt ***** out.

He did show signs of fatigue, letting the crowd sing some parts and on a couple occasions, Michael Anthony bailed him out on mead vocals.

But all in all, Hagar was phenomenal.

Michael Anthony (my personal favorite part of the show) does not age. His voice is still killer and he showed some nice chops on the bass.

Jason Bonham was fantastic. 1000x the drummer Alex Van Halen ever has been and ever could be.

Joe Satriani …. It should go without saying that he was ridiculous. He was.

He played EVH parts with respect and stayed true to Eddie’s form, style and sound.

My spoiler is that they did not do Eruption, which I am certain was out of respect - which I liked.

My biggest takeaway from last night was that, while Satriani nailed all of the chords and notes (the guy is a virtuoso, after all), a lot of the chord progressions seemed a little choppy and almost labored.

This isn’t a knock on Satriani.

It’s more of an acknowledgement/realization of just how amazing EVH was. I’ve seen videos of Eddie playing the same tunes with a natural flow and grace. Yes - I realize that he wrote them and that’s a big reason the transitions were so smooth and flawless.

But I’ve seen Satriani play an entire set of Hendrix tunes and it was jaw-dropping.

Don’t get me wrong - Satriani was amazing last night. But it seemed like more work for him than the other couple times I’ve seen him live playing his own stuff and Hendrix stuff.

I’ve always considered EVH a Top 3 rock guitarist of all time.

After last night, I find myself contemplating crowning him as the GOAT.

I saw them last Friday in Charlotte.  i have to agree with:

 - Hagar is ageless. I hope I am that spry at 76 (after a lifetime of R & R excesses to boot).

 - Michael Anthony was in great voice - His background harmonies are sooo distinctive.

 - Satriani was the star of the show. Just frickin' amazing.

I disagree with:

 - Satriani sounded choppy or labored (I had read online that someone called it "soul-less"). i thought he was respectful of the original material and put his own touch on sound.

If anyone was labored, it was the keyboardist. The keys to Jump were just god-awful.
