No lesser source than the Pentagon confirms that copies of the Quran were defiled at Guantanamo Bay.

So Newsweek did have the story right.  So why did they recant?  Was it due to pressure from the U.S. Government?  If Newsweek is guilty of anything, it's lacking a spine.

I think you're guilty of not reading the whole article. The report confirms five incidents of guards mishandling the Quran (which AI apparently believes qualifies it for "gulag" status), and FIFTEEN reports of DETAINEES mishandling their own Qurans. Newsweeks' story was wrong after all.

I think you are splitting hairs. The Newsweek article mentions flushing a Quran down a toilet. The Pentagon and FBI reports talk about other forms of disrespect including sprinkling urine on the book. The Muslim holy book was defiled.

Many of you howled at Newsweek's lack of professionalism for reporting a story that wasn't confirmed. But the point was abuses did occur and Newsweek caved into White House pressure to retract the story. Now the FBI and the pentagon confirm it.

Before you all say "who the f**k cares" keep in mind that we are being judged by the majority of the world's muslims who are not terrorists. On one side you have terror groups screaming America is evil. On the other side you have the US saying we are trying to create democracy in the Middle East. When Muslims see stuff like this, how does it make us look? How can they trust our intentions when we litterally piss on their beliefs?

From your link:

On March 25, a detainee complained to guards that "urine came through an air vent" and splashed on him and his Quran. A guard admitted he was at fault, but a report released Friday evening offering new details about Quran mishandling incidents did not make clear whether the guard intended the result.
OK, so that sounds like an accident unless our guard practice urinating through air vents while aiming at books.

Hood said that of nine mishandling cases that were studied in detail by reviewing thousands of pages of written records, five were confirmed. He could not determine conclusively whether the other four took place.
THOUSANDS OF PAGES OF WRITTEN RECORDS....and you just wet yourself over nine cases, of which five were confirmed, and, in any event, were 'mishandling' cases which does not specify whether the case was intentional or not.

Let's keep going:

Hood also said his investigation found 15 cases of detainees mishandling their own Qurans. "These included using a Quran as a pillow, ripping pages out of the Quran, attempting to flush a Quran down the toilet and urinating on the Quran," Hood's report said. It offered no possible explanation for the detainees' motives.

In the most recent of those 15 cases, a detainee on Feb. 18 allegedly ripped up his Quran and handed it to a guard, stating that he had given up on being a Muslim. Several guards witnessed this, Hood reported.

Are you upset about them? Where was Newsweak on this?

Hood said last week he found no credible evidence that a Quran was ever flushed down a toilet. He said a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Quran in the toilet has since told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Quran desecration.
Oops, Newsweak was wrong.

Of course, no one in the media (or on the Left) wants to give us any credit for even letting these animals have their little books in the first place. We go out of our way to respect the rights of TERRORISTS and catch hell when the 'news' doesn't think we're doing it correctly.

Note to anyone who gives a sh-- about this story: Get your MF priorities straight and STFU.

Yes, the terrorists are animals. They cut people's heads off and videotape it. They take over schools and massacre children. They mutilate women. They strap suicide bomber vests to mentally retarded children and pregnant women.

And we're going above and beyond the call of duty to placate them. But your problem is we're not doing a good enough job of that.

The rest of the Muslim world? They should toughen the !@#$ up. They don't care that Saudi policy is to confiscate and destroy any Bible found in that country. That's their official policy. We have five confirmed cases of mishandling a Koran belonging to a terrorist and the Muslim world wants to cry about it. Well, either let them cry or let them grow the !@#$ up. What does it say when we have to treat them entirely differently than every other society on earth because they're extra sensitive? When we have to treat them like children? Let's treat them like equals who should be able to handle a tiny bit of bad news like adults.

I'm sick of this story. I'm sick of our media's fight against the military and it's 'gotcha' policy of trying to recreate Watergate for the past 30 years.

No, I'm not splitting hairs. Newsweek specifically reported guards had flushed a Quran down the toilet - a charge which was not true, and Newseek admitted they had no proof of this when they retracted the story.

"Now the FBI and the Pentagon confirm this"??! The official reports shows a pattern of respectful treatment - the guard who urinated on the air vent, causing it to land on a Quran? He admitted it, and was removed from any post that would come in contact with detainees.

In case you missed it the first time - THE REPORT DOCUMENTS MORE INCIDENTS OF MISHANDLING OF THE QURAN BY DETAINEES THAN GUARDS.

Who the f**k cares? I would, if I thought there was actually something to be concerned about.

According to CNN, the DETAINEES were the one who flushed the Quran down the toilet, not the guards.

Detainees...guards. Let's not split hairs here. Let's just blame the military. Fair enough?

I don't know why anyone would defend the Pentagon based on their press releases. You know, ten years from now, it will come out that one was indeed flushed down the toilet and the response will be, 'Oh. Really? Newsweek was right then? Well, whatever.'

Not that I really care what they do to that book of hate anyway. Riot b/c of a fuggin' piece of paper going through the sewerage? Any excuse for violence in that part of the world. And I'm still waiting for someone to print the Quran on rolls of toilet paper.

First of all, your post implies that you care about whether or not there is "democracy" in the Middle East and as we know, wishy-washy lefties like you do not, and were perfectly content while Saddam was gassing babies and paying suicide bombers to kill Jews.

Next, please don't act as if this nonsense is/will be the cause of terrorism. Go to the Middle east, yell the word "Jew" and thousands of these animals will blow themselves up in order to kill others.

American were beheaded as were other Allied soldiers and civilians, right? Where were you? Sitting in the corner crying about some book?

Do you know just how flimsy you make yourself appear? Today is a nice day. Why dont you go and chain yourself in front of a store that sells fur coats?

Deserved WHAT? Having their little book mishandled? Geeks in American high schools go through worse than this and, unlike terrorists, in most cases they take it like men.

They "mishandle" the Korans themselves. Why is this even a news story?

Standing up for terrorists this afternoon? Fine, the cute little murderers deserve nothing bad to ever happen to them again ever, even if by accident. Happy? I'm glad everyone cares so much about the feelings of a bunch of A-holes we captured on the battlefield trying to kill Americans.

"Ours is a war not against a religion, not against the Muslim faith. But ours is a war against individuals who absolutely hate what America stands for, and hate the freedom of the Czech Republic. And therefore, we must work together to defend ourselves. And by remaining strong and united and tough, we'll prevail."

This is why its a big deal. We say that Islam should be treated with the same dignity and respect of Christianity, and that we should respect its traditions, then we do another thing. This furthers the stereotype that we are a two-faced lying evil country to them.

We say Islam should be respected. When's the last time someone flushed a Bible down a toilet to get under a Christian's skin in an American prison? I'm sure if that happened people would be blathering on and on about how that person/persons didn't respect Christianity or the law and would be calling for their heads.

The issue isn't about standing up for terrorists - !@#$ them. The issue is about respecting a people and religion, and doing what we say we are doing (not being hypocritical).

You mean like when our flag is burned constantly in the Middle East?

Or how its illegal to own a bible in Saudi Arabia and what happens to you if you're caught with one?

Maybe we can resolve this problem by not giving these A-holes bibles and religious materials in the first place.

Since they're in G.B., I'd agree with the hot and add a 'spicy.' Habaneros to burn the mouth at every meal and then habaneros to burn the * after every meal. <_<<_< Burn the eggs, burn the toast, undercook the potatoes, apples that fell to the ground. Nothing in there about it having to be good food.
