But he doesn't offer much in the way of quality analysis most of the time, and knows less about each specific situation than many. MJS Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Who is "we"? I've never been down on McDermott. 1 1 1 Quote
Straight Hucklebuck Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 I like McDermott has loosened some this year. At the podium he sounds happier, he constantly praises WNY, the fans, the players. He laughs now. He genuinely cares and I think appreciates support this team receives. But I do agree that he’s under pressure to perform in these Playoffs. 2 Quote

folz Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Don't know why anyone watches Colin Cowherd. He just continually has bad take after bad take, week after week, year after year. Plus he's smug. He's been down on Sean for a long time and the timing of this discussion is just so poor with how the Bills have been playing. IF, BIG IF, the Bills lose to an inferior opponent early in the playoffs, fine have this conversation. But it is ridiculous to me to be talking about it at this point. 1 Quote

"I think these are the Sean McDermott playoffs.... "If they get bounced early in the playoffs... if Cincinnati got in & played Buffalo in the 1st round, and Cincinnati won, I'm telling you, I think McDermott's in trouble." "When I watch this team - I don't want to hear about Josh Allen. This is not a Josh Allen referendum. He lost a game cuz he scored a TD with 13 seconds left to Mahomes." "This team, this coaching staff, has REAL pressure on them." We were really down on McDermott last year, and there's been a decent amount of discussion about McDermott this year (especially after the Rams game), but I've heard many others throwing his name out for Coach of the Year. It sounds odd that someone who some consider COTY material would also be someone who could get fired after this postseason, regardless of outcome. If the scenario that Colin suggested played out & we lost to the Bengals in the WC round, then yeah, I don't see how you can keep him. But what about the divisional round? Nobody would be happy with another 2nd round exit, but would this start to feel like a Marvin Lewis situation (only the 2nd round instead of the 1st)? I'm not preemptively planning for defeat, but I also haven't really considered what this team would look like without McDermott. Him & Beane are so close, it's hard to imagine a true coaching staff reboot. What do you all think? Is this postseason a "Sean McDermott" playoffs? He literally says crap like this all the time. Nothing happens. I bet you could find a clip of him saying it every year after 13 seconds. Quote

I don't think any realistic chance he is fired this year. From everything I was told previously the relationship with Terry is solid and to hear him talk about Sean in the 10 years of ownership video it's almost a father - son type deal. And I don't think Terry lets Beane and McDermott embark on their re-set last February / March without an acknowledgment that it might affect their championship chances in 2024. However, a third home playoff loss, and worse, one in the wildcard round to a team the Bills are clearly better than would I think heat the seat up signifcantly going into 2025 and then I think they might be in its "now or never" type territory. Losing a heartbreaker to Baltimore or Kansas City doesn't get them there, IMO. Losing at home to Denver or Miami would. 2 Quote
Boatdrinks Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 The Bills need to make the AFC title game at minimum this postseason. If not, a major change needs to happen. Hopefully T Pegs / Beane understand this. They’re the only ones with opinions that matter. Ideally the Bills get the job done and it’s not necessary. 1 1 Quote

You're going to get 1 and only 1 shot at Ben Johnson. Especially if Brady leaves too. If Sean loses again (primarily because of HIS Defense) early in the playoffs, I'm saying goodbye and bringing in Johnson. I honestly feel he could have the success and longevity of Andy Reid. This would be the 6th straight year McDermott fails to help JA get to a SB. And then there's the Terry factor. Is he just content with yearly regular season success? If Brady leaves and Sean survives, then Josh has to start over with his 4th OC in 5 years. That doesn't sound like continuity to me. Sean has has plenty of opportunities to build a better playoff D. 1 1 1 1 1 Quote

Dr.Sack Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 I don’t blame any loss on anyone. We about to smoke CIN, BAL, KC & PHI. Josh Allen Revenge Tour. 3 Quote
Mikie2times Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 (edited) If you want to go by wins and points, sure, we look really good, now and this year as whole. If you want a more nuanced conversation we have benefited a massive amount from turnovers, been overwhelmed at times defensively, and have been fairly dependent on Allen going off schedule for extended periods. I wonder if the turnovers will extend against teams that are much better with the football? If not, what happens? So many games have swung on turnovers. Turnovers have saved this defense over and over this year. I’m certainly not downplaying that they generated these mistakes themselves, but again, what does it look like if they can’t or worse, we end up -1 or -2 in a game? We basically have our two statement wins, one vs KC which we have seen before and one against a Detroit team that is as injured as any in football. Impressive wins, sure, but alot of people here have taken those wins along with our record and said this team is + vs years past. Perhaps offensively they’re, but everything else is worse than years past. I also expect playoff level defenses to force Allen into more structure which will put pressure on Brady to scheme our guys open and call elite games. I’m confident we can put up some good results, but not historic levels, which is what I think it will take for us offensively to overcome other shortcomings. If we get stagnant even for a couple quarters it could be enough to send us home. Just no margin for error with this defense. To be perfectly honest this team appears to me like some serious fools gold. Even worse than years past. I know, I suck, bla bla So should McD go if they show themselves to be what I just said? I thought he should go prior. Still think he should go but I don’t expect that. I don’t think we will play the Bengals. If we do it becomes more plausible as a first round loss to them would be a pretty big black mark but it wouldn’t be enough this year in my opinion. Super Bowl or a nail biting loss in the AFCC are the only ways to prevent him being replaced. And honestly, that’s fair imo. If they get bounced in the WC or divisionals he has to reach the Super Bowl in 2025 otherwise you realistically have to make the move. I’m a critic of Sean in some moments but a huge supporter of his however he’s had several chances and the team hasn’t showed up… Defensively… That is part is the problem. His coaching niche has been the reason the franchise has been on the wrong end of the result more often than not in the playoffs. 2020: Great overall. Sadly the offense sputtered early in that AFCC. 2021: 13 seconds. Enough said. 2022: Struggled to contain Skyler Thompson and the Fish. Couldn’t scheme anything against the Bengals and their backup carousel of offensive tackles. Whole team failed to make an appearance that day. Sadder it was at home. 2023: Defense didn’t show up, granted we were missing 2 key players in Bernard and Benford. (Milano missed most of the year. Doesn’t really count) Every excuse has been used. Again, no problem returning with no questions if he gets us to the AFCC or the SB. 2 4 1 Quote

Super Bowls are over-rated anyway. It's all about the regular season bling. 3 1 1 Quote
