Lineman carry a lot of water weight

Some lineman lose five pounds a day in training camp

The guy was 314 at the combine. He was 370. He was big enough all offseason for this board to crack jokes about him playing two OL positions at the same time.

Now we are talking about water weight.

Did anybody actually read the article? He put on 40 pounds by the end of February. Went on an extreme diet, lost all that weight in 5 weeks! That’s like the first week of April. He’s been on a more conventional diet since. Plenty of time to get his strength back. That’s 5 months. And just cause somebody has body fat does not mean they are not strong, in shape or quick and agile! Some people are just freaks of nature.

a friend of mine is about 6-3 200lbs and wash board abs, dunk a Bball, quick as a cat. He likes to mess with his brother 6-3 or so also, easily over 300lbs. So skinny ripped guy messes with big bro and takes off running, big bro catches him. Big bro is quick and fast. Freak of nature.

Much easier to put him in the pillory.  I don't get it, but the hate is marrow deep around here since the Bengals game.

I get it, it was a bad game for the Bills.  But it's a start to a new season.  At the very least wait for the 1st game to be played.

From an interview or podcast with Eric Woods, the eating life of an NFL lineman during the season can be a challenge.  To maintain weight, some of them eat 6 or even 7 times a day (Spencer Brown said he keeps a smoothie by his bed and wakes up in the middle of the night to consume it).  They may be eating 4,000-8,000 calories a day to maintain weight or even add a little while trying to maintain their strength/fitness and play during the season.

I know from personal experience that if I'm getting a ton of physical exercise then I get an injury and cut that out sharply, I can gain a lot of weight super-quickly unless I really mind the calories right away.

Dawkins problem isn’t keeping the weight on, it’s keeping it off.

Every Bills generation has a tub of goo. It used to be Dareus. Now it’s Frosty from Wendy’s the Schnowman.

Hmmm… count me among those who don’t completely understand the genesis of this article. We’re to celebrate the fact that Dion lost 40 extra pounds of fat as some sort of commitment to the team? Versus the alternative to this situation which is, you know, showing up and weighing 370 pounds? Commitment isn’t spending time shedding extra bad weight, commitment is getting with a nutritionist and personal trainer early in the offseason and dedicating yourself to working on your build, maximizing your athletic attributes to perform at your best in the 310-320 pound range. That’s commitment. Strange piece.

Yes agreed. It's highly concerning behavior for a franchise player. Gaining 40 pounds in one month is indicative of serious eating disorders, and a 600-800 calorie crash diet for a big athlete is a bad idea. Bragging about losing weight they gained since you last saw them is also the oldest trick in the book for delusional narcissists.

Let's also add that:

A. He looked slow, overweight and was getting beat by speed rushers in November and December as well.

B. He looked overweight and ridiculous in that shirtless suit. Pure delusion that looked presentable.

C. He looked the heaviest and slowest I've ever seen him in the preseason game against Pitt.

I am really worried this guy will eat himself out of the league....and this only reaffirms it to me- he won't have a long career.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago about Dawkins:  It seems like every off season he tries to get back to where he was last season.   And every year it takes a little longer.

My problem is, i never see or hear or feel him trying to be better than last year.   "'ill be back to where i was by" the last preseason game, or week 2, or week 6, or 'dont worry about it, I'll be fine."

I mean i get he has admitted emotional-eating issues.  And "oh he gets paid to stay in shape."  But again, when is he ever actually better than he was the previous season.  Or trying to.  Or talking about it.

Its kinda like he is slow-retiring.  since he got his big contract.

Well, if I get Dion's story right, he put on a lot of "comfort weight" in February and March.

What happened at the end of January to make him need that comfort?

Could it be a little depression after a bad ending to a stressful season?

These guys are humans with the same feelings as anyone else.  I'm sure in retrospect Dawkins wishes it didn't happen, but it did.

As to his captaincy, maybe he needed to concentrate on himself more this season.  I'll leave that to his teammates in the locker room.

He evidently had to work hard to correct his weight, and he did.  I guess I'm just glad he righted the ship.

I'm not buying any tar and feathers yet.

I wish this place had more posters like you. This place is overrun by the vocal minority. Called the lynch mob. They're not happy until they find someone to gripe about. Happens every season. I just hope this board is a substitute for them kicking their dogs, yelling at their kids, or beating their wives.

I have been very critical of Dion Dawkins  due to what looks like a heavier, out of shape player. I have also questioned his commitment to being a serious top level player.

I was really happy to read today’s article discussing his weight loss and commitment to having a great year.

Was this a “fluff” piece or something to be appreciative of?

Not sure, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt,,, a good year from Dion could have a huge impact on our season .

About 100 days ago there was a lot of discussion about Dawkins weight at mini camp. I think I said "no worries, he'll be in football shape by September 11."

Told ya so!

I do appreciate this point of view because you are right. I think about Caleb Farley and some fans calling him a bust, while he is struggling with both his parents dying in awful ways and bad injuries. I used to defend Dareus because that guy went through a lot personally. So I really respect this point of view.

I know people who know Dawkins. Everyone loves him but he loves to have a party and have a good time. There’s a chance you could be right but I think it is more of a case of a guy who just gets sloppy in the off season. And he’s not the only one who does. But when you come back sloppy and struggle, you deserve to be criticized.

I always appreciate his honesty but this would drive me insane if I was paying him.  Have your fun but be a professional too.

Just for a bit more perspective, the average American male in his 20s weighs 200 pounds.

Let's say for the sake of discussion that Dion's "natural football weight" is 330 pounds.

Him dropping from 370 to 330 pounds is roughly equivalent to one of us bloating up to 225 pounds and dropping to 200 pounds.

Inexact science I know but we're not talking about an average-sized guy here.

I get your point, but gaining 12% of your body weight in something like 6 weeks(if that's true) is still very concerning.

[I'm not sure it's true, I think Dion was getting sloppy and gaining weight through the season]

I didn't know this was a beauty pageant.

It’s not.  It’s athletics.  Might want to be in shape to continue to perform at a high level as one ages.  Control the things you can, such as diet, and sleep, and exercise, and focus.  This guy has a problem on the intake front that could well impair his performance this year and that likely will shorten his career.

I could be wrong, but I think Dawkins was actually getting sloppy the end of last season.    I don't actually buy the "I gained 40 lbs between Jan 22 and Mar 1" notion.

And he may say he lost the weight in a month or so (by the time OTAs rolled around) but I'm the one who looked at pics of Dion coming into voluntary workouts and went "OMG".  He still looked hugely sloppy in the photos the Bills put out.

You're absolutely right, party but when you're being paid for your physical skills, be a professional and preserve them.

There is this function of the board called “ignore”.  If the “vocal minority” is causing you to lose sleep at night, you might want to consider using it.

Personally, I don't use the "ignore" function for those who I disagree with, but I do use it for the blatant trolls.
