Agreed. I was somewhat opposed to the Miller signing. I saw the importance of having an edge guy like Von on the team, of course. But I worried about the cap implications and opportunity cost. We could have built a better OL with that money! In fact, I still complain about the opportunity cost. But, compared to this deal, Von looks like a bargain. Ethan in Cleveland
49ers had other options. Force him to play on the tag or trade him. Sometimes you just have to make the tough call and let them go be someone else's cap problem. The master of this was of course Belichick but Ozzie Newsome was good at it too. Both won titles with great defenses. Not sure that is possible anymore.

Even if he gets 20 sacks a year, is 1.7M/sack even worth it? That would be like paying AJ Epenesa 10M last year. It's far more realistic that he averages in the mid double digits ~15 for 2.8M/sack Contract doesn't make sense to me either. He had better dominate in the post season.

klos63
The cap goes up every season, by a lot, and teams restructure deals that frees up a lot also. Let's not overreact here. SF is fine. The QB plus superstar WR1 combo is definitely prohibitive in modern terms. (Allen/Diggs are nearly $75M next season) I haven’t run numbers in the last year or so but as a percentage of cap qb contracts aren’t wildly out of line with days gone by. the remarkable thing is likely as a percentage of ownership cash on hand
