Read that again as many times as you need to absorb it. I’m going to keep talking about this until it’s not true anymore because it’s ***** bonkers. https://t.co/sY4y8fcnZ7" / X (twitter.com)

He was a horrible President. The Whigs thought they had finally overcome the built in constitutional advantage the slave states had by electing William Henry Harrison, and then he died right after taking office. Buffalo had a huge stake in the 1840 presidential election. The port of Buffalo was struggling to keep up with the massive amount of commerce coming into it from the Great Lakes region and wanted the federal governmenet to help by building a break wall to protect the city from the storms that walloped the city and to have small harbors around the lakes so steamboats and sailing vessels could take shelter during storms. Milliard Fillmore was chairmen of the house ways and means committee and was all set to push a bill through the house, the senate was all set to follow through and then Harrison up and died. Tyler, a Virginian, was not about to help the free states grow any faster and so internal improvements had to wait.  Buffalo continued to grow, though
