When is the deadline?

Tuesday 4 PM - Every team must have their roster down to 53 players

Wednesday Noon - Teams must have their waiver claims in for players waived in the cutdown from 80 to 53

Wednesday 4 PM - Teams can start to place players on their 53-man roster on IR with an eligibility to return after a minimum of four games. Any player placed on IR before this deadline will be lost for the entire season

Friday 9/1 4 PM - NFL teams can begin signing players to their practice squads

I believe these days and times are correct.

Practice squad players can be signed immediately after the Wednesday noon waiver period ends. Well, technically it's shortly after that. Once that waiver period ends at noon the league sends out a list of every team's roster to all the teams. Once this Personnel Notice is sent they can begin signing PS players.

So, do we think like this:

-guys released before Tuesday - probably are not going to be the ones they are trying to resign on Wednesday after the IR designations…

- the early releases are not expected back to releasing team, and are getting a chance to catch on with another team.

Generally speaking, yes.  Most teams will hold off waiving the players they want for their PS until the end.

My understanding is the waiver rules make that the best way.  Let's say a team is interested in a backup QB (good example).

Using that example:  Beane (Buffalo Bills) is way down the waiver list.  Let's also say he is interested in 2 or 3 guys that are getting waived.

He can put in for one of the 3 he likes.  It's risky to put in for more because if no other team picks any of those guys up ahead of him he

has to sign all the backup QBs he put in for.  On the other hand, one (or more) could be picked up by other teams and he gets none of them.

GMs know this and try to release all the better players all at once to get as many through waivers as possible.  Kind of "safety in numbers".

Of course, the teams at the top of the list have much better odds of getting who they want.

Now, as for the vets who get "released", they become UFAs and can sign to any team they want.  It seems it would be extremely hectic for a

very short period of time.  There are 3 separate things going on at once.  Waived, released and then PS signing.

Don’t they have to wait until after the deadline to either be claimed or sign with a new team?

No, they don't.  Let's say one of these released guys clear waivers.  They then immediately become an UFA.  Teams can sign these guys

any time they want.  An example is Jason Peters.  He is also an UFA and any team can sign him at any time.

Acquiring one of these players just means someone else is getting cut by deadline time.

Vested FAs might not have to but according to Sal, anyone subject to waivers can’t be claimed until 12pm on Wednesday after the deadline.

Great thread, thank you. Not sure how often you’re on or how closely you’re following cuts, but updating your original post as more cuts are announced would be FANTASTIC, if feasible.

Thanks again! 👍🏼

Please remember this thread is for the cuts. Keep it clear of Convo so people can get the information without scrolling through 20 pages. There is a thread Simon (I believe) started for the discussion.
