buffaloboyinATL Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I know some here feel that backup QB is a weakness for the Bills this season. I have no idea what the 49ers are willing to trade him for, but since he is a 3rd string QB on their roster, and they have a decent 4th QB right now, they may take less than I originally thought. I personally would gladly trade a 4th or lower for him, because his style of play is a closer fit to Josh Allen than our current backups. 1 1 2 1 Quote

Special K Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 If a team is willing to get rid of a guy that they traded three first round picks for, what does that tell you about his abilities? 4 4 Quote
FireChans Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 (edited) No. We wouldn’t pick up his option and we wouldn’t re-sign him. Why rent a backup project? Edited August 24, 2023 by FireChans 2 Quote
FilthyBeast Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 No because he doesn't solve the backup QB issue or any other hole on this roster. Dude is a bum and there's a reason he's going to be cut or traded for virtually nothing... Quote
Kirby Jackson Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I would if I could but it would be contingent on a 2 year extension (acceptable base with lots of upside). Worst case scenario you have a solid backup for a few years. If he plays and succeeds, you have an elite trade chip. I think that it raises the floor on this team (he is better than Kyle Allen and Barkley). It potentially raises the ceiling if he shows out and they trade him. 3 1 Quote

He would not accept the 2 year extension. He will want to go somewhere to compete for a starting job. Atlanta, TB, Vikings etc would give him a better salary and an opportunity. This isn’t a Trubisky-type guy who needs to rehab his image. He hasn't played. 1 Quote

Maybe, maybe not, he is in a similar situation to when Trubisky came to the Bills. He does need to rehab his image as apparently he is playing behind Darnold. MAYBE, someone like Atlanta, looks at him as a potential starter. If not, he needs to go to an established program and rebuild his value. Right now, the perception is, “he must not be very good.” 3 1 Quote

I think his perception is much more "maybe he can still be good," than Trubisky was. Mitch had played 50 games for the Bears, there was a book out on him. Lance is MUCH more unknown, imo. That's a good thing for the Niners, honestly, because it drives his value up. Trubisky didn't even have a trade market. We are talking about a fourth for Lance. That should be proof enough the situations are not the same. 1 Quote
The Jokeman Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I'd rather a QB needy team try the Lance project. 1 Quote
nucci Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 (edited) he's either 3rd or 4th QB on 49ers. Why give up anything for him? If he couldn't beat out Darnold he can't be that good and will probably be released Edited August 24, 2023 by nucci Quote
Teddy KGB Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Guy can’t beat Sam Darnold for a job. Hard pass, bust !! 1 Quote
MikePJ76 Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I would take him for a 6 or 7 and then hope to move him for a 3 or 4 in a year or two if he plays well next year in the preseason. He is not worth any pick of real value Quote

It may require a more cerebral QB, like Purdy and Darnold, to run it effectively. This does not mean that Lance couldn't be successful in a different system. If the price was low enough, and we could work out the contract to have him as a backup for a couple of years, it might be worth a look. 1 Quote
