I understood the talent, but it was a big gamble. I think Josh Allen destroying the 49ers in MNF convinced Lynch and Shanny to take a big swing at QB.

This is the biggest myth people regurgitate here. Since the dawn of time NFL teams have sought after the big, athletic, rocket armed QB. Josh is like millionth iteration of that prototype QB. And there have been so many busts just like Trey Lance. Josh changed nothing in this regard.

Josh is one of the few that actually panned out to super stardom status... It's always been the prototype

Have you actually looked at the numbers? The salary is only like 1 million each year, 2023 and 24. SF is responsible for the huge signing bonus ( 20,22 million?) Not the team that trades for him

Didn't he already receive a signing bonus of about 22 million? There is a total of about 10 million remaining( salary plus roster bonuses)for the last 2 years; 2023 and 24.

I think 22 million of a total contract value of 34 was paid as a signing  bonus. They way I understand it,a team acquiring him would be on the hook for a total of about 11,12 million over the remaining 2 years of the contract. The salary is negligible ( 1 million each year)but the roster bonuses could be somewhat costly)

Why would we trade a draft pick for a young, unproven, untested QB who would come in right before the season and be totally unfamiliar with the playbook.

 

That draft pick we give up could be a MLB or OT

 

They don't look good, but bottom line is we are most likely going w/ Barkley and Kyle Allen as our backup QB's

Just goes to show that all these boom or bust prospects are truly just that, but in Lance case this dude definitely one of the biggest busts of all time considering the circumstances and if not for the 49ers being a serious contender in recent years folks would be out of a job for sure.

They never gave him the chance to grow and injuries didn't help.  They were a win now team drafting a project QB who needed a lot of reps.  It was a dumb trade up but they should've went with Mac Jones once they did.

That's called division 1 football... Hockey players and soccer players and tennis players are playing pro at 18... Some professional hockey and soccer players are playing overseas at 16

 

Every single player in the NFL is at least 3 years removed from HS .... Every single one without exception

 

You get five years with a red shirt of top notch strength conditioning and nutrition... These kids bodies change drastically from 18 to 23

 

That's the minor league system

 

If you need more seasoning you go to Canada... Or the feeder league

 

The NCAA has been pumping out ready-made guys for 90 years

the real issue is the niners are probably the best spot in the league for a young qb to get high quality reps without tanking the season. 
 

I haven’t seen the guy play much, for obvious reasons, but it’s unfortunate how his shot played out. Now he will burn through 3 systems in 3 years bouncing around the league as a backup fighting to start on terrible teams, right?

A team like the Vikings would be smart to trade for him as they have a solid foundation in place especially on offense.  Let him learn behind Cousins for a year like Mahomes did behind Alex Smith.

You don't seem to understand the bonus payment has already occurred. 

You're missing those roster bonuses-those are the killers in the contract.  Take a look at the attachment earlier in this thread that shows how much money he's owed the next 2 years & get back to us.

Then what?  Pay him his big roster bonus next year & accept his 5th year option without seeing him play?  The guy has no future with his present contract.  The best chance he has to succeed is being released by SF & signing a team friendly 2-3 year deal as a free agent.
