No. It is required for pilots who are going operate in hostile countries, what we call "feet dry." It is not required for anti sub, transport, non search and rescue helicopters and others who would not go feet dry, ergo, not risk a POW thing. It has changed massively since I went through, especially with the admission of women into that profession, but it was a very unenjoyable, but very valuable experience. 1

A bit off topic, but speaking of Tijuana and crime, Anyone hear of the Coronado High drug ring that happened in the 60s and 70s? https://magazine.atavist.com/coronado-high/ Fascinating story. It's a very, very long read, but well worth it. A movie was in the works, but apparently fell through.
T&C
In the 8th grade we went to Attica State prison on a field trip. Spent a 2 solid hours in there. One of those motivational deals... small speeches by inmates about how you don't want to wind up in there... don't be like them, etc. The place is pretty intimidating once you walk through the front door. I know a friend who went to the academy and flew fighters had to do all of this. Figured it was standard. He has a Pentagon desk job now, got it like 4 years ago after spending a decade training pilots in Florida. Golden*Wheels
Got a night in lockup as a kid for smashing mailboxes. I received the full "cop is gonna scare this kid straight" treatment. I think it kind of worked.

Lot of ppl ask about that when they are definitely getting locked up soon or think there's a good chance of it lol. When the inevitable moment it's said to you, "find the biggest dude and punch him in the face".... I'd suggest not to take that advice haha. I unfortunately can say that prison is better than jail, in most cases anyways...hang in there,

Just Jack
Yes, when I worked for the county, doing computer/printer repair, I'd have to go over to the local and county jail sometimes for service calls.

A guy I know reasonably well was in for about 10 years. I believe it was Dannemora, upstate NY, for drug conspiracy. Interesting guy—-told me he was guilty of many things, but in that case was set up by the local PD (also known for corruption, historically). Told me he hung out with Gotti Jr while there, and said it was all about survival and hanging together with like/kind people. He said it was mostly boring. The closest I came to going to the big house was sneaking some contraband candy into Money Heist with Ben Stiller. I never felt so alive. 1

muppy
I have known several people who spent time in prison for various assorted crimes. My sister had a boyfriend who was incarcerated. I don' recall where he was housed but definitely a minimum security facility. She would visit on he weekend and bring him trays of food. Specifically home made manicotti.. This was in the 70's . I know an ex con from Donovans Correcional facility here in san diego that was paroled after convicted of 2nd degree murder. He became a Christian behind bars and has remained free with his wife and family for over 8 years. I actually met him first inside the prison. I had clearance to enter as a ministry volunteer. It involved a lot of walking and through several security posts. Yard C was maximum security. We workers were not allowed to wear anything blue due to it being the color the prisoners wore. The prison guards treated us respectfully for the most part. Some didn't like we were there The chapel was where we would interact with the inmates. We had specific training on how to behave behind the walls. My husband served in a prison ministry effort called KAIROS. In his kairos group in yard B was Suge Knight. The death row records exec That guy. Kairos has a Graduation ceremony where people can apply for and receive a one day clearance and attend as a surprise for the men. I attended and saw him. When he got up to speak said his name was Suge I could hardly believe it. He is a fairly big guy bald head black sunglasses. aristocrat
Guy I knew got a year in prison and he got through by running the gambling. He just said the guys in there are just the most degenerate types of peoples and he got enough guys to owe him money he was fine. but when he first got in he thought he had to fight so he got into a fight with a skin head but they tricked him into taking the fight in their little wing and they jumped him and beat the shot outta him. He didn’t talk so he got left alone after but his nose is crooked as hell

Jauronimo
I did a nickel in Big Spring for insider trading. It wasn't so bad. Food sucked and it was boring but people mostly kept to themselves. Had to shank a guy who budged me in line for the go karts but other than that it was easy time. We actually became quite good friends after that, funnily enough. Edited August 17, 2023 by Jauronimo

If I could plea bargain that to six months under house arrest with an ankle bracelet (during football season), then I'd take the cool quarter mil. As for prison - there's no price high enough for me.
