I saw both Anthony and Roth at the Pro-AM  that I mentioned above.  I had seen them both many times on TV, but what struck me in person was the hooks on their balls and  the power when the balls hit the pocket. As compared to amateurs, the pins exploded when hit.

That was Thruway Lanes. Snow collapsed the roof and they rebuilt.  Used to have the PBA tour through there.  My friend won the amateur title of the Pro-Ambthere one year.  Got in it by winning  the title at his  local lane (Broadway Sports Center).  The amateurs would  bowl with 3 different pros  and the  combined scores determined the winners. He won $1500 back in the  late 70s. We partied that night.

If you're as archaic as I am you might remember that Thruway lanes was also where the "Beat The Champ" TV show aired from every week back in the early 60's. I can't remember crap I did last week but I remember Nin Angelo being the reigning Champion on that show for a record setting run of 19 weeks! My father took me down there near the end of his run once to see the show live and I got a black & white autographed picture of him.

Us wiseass types altered 'Beat the Champ' into 'Beat the Chump', and directed it towards our less urbane coworkers from my previously cited industrial league. 😁

I believe WIVB at one point christened its one hour evening local newscast as 'Buffalo's Shining Hour'.  In reality, everyone in WNY knew Buffalo's Shining Hour was 'Bowling for Dollars' and 'Strikes, Spares, and Misses'. 🙄

What lanes did they use for those shows?

I believe it was WBEN back then and I think it was the later part of the 70's when it became WIVB.

Chuck Healy was the big bowling announcer back then... that was just shortly before"Van" became the REAL man!

'Strikes, Spares, and Misses' was 'Truway', I believe.  If you're asking for actual lane numbers, your OCD is worse than mine. 😁

As for 'Bowling for Dollars', wasn't an alley constructed right at WGR(Z)'s studio?  Ed Kilgore as the emcee for many years.

Ed: "What's your name?"

Bowler: "Stan Yahintski"

Ed: "Where do you work?"

Bowler: "Chevy"

Ed: "Say hello to the folks at home?"

Bowler: "Hi, Babcia, and the guys at work!"
