Barbie vs Oppenheimer

Recommend only one movie to a friend/family member.

 

Comparatively, one movie will make you feel like a moron, while the other will leave you feeling like a genius.

I'm pretty sure I know which will make more money, by a wide margin.

I am just sort of curious who the audience is for Barbie. It doesn’t seem to really fit any major demographic of movie goer.

Saw Oppenheimer today at the local IMAX. 

 

Loved it. Nolan is just an amazing screenwriter and director. It's a little 'all over the place' for the first half of the movie, but it then ties up and makes total sense at the end. They did leave a lot of crazy/tragic things that happened that weren't in the movie... like the death of physicist Louis Slotin. They never really showed or talked about that. But WELL WORTH going to. The cinematography is amazing. Acting is amazing and it's PACKED full of A-List actors.

He's one of these people that Hollywood has deemed "a star" for no particular reason.  There are many such people.  I still don't understand what anyone ever saw in Tom Hanks, for example.  He's probably as successful of a living actor as there is.  Why?  

 

As someone who would have enjoyed the hell out of a well done film about Dunkirk, all I can say is the film Nolan made is terrible.

 

Have not seen, nor do I watch, comic book movies...so maybe his Batman stuff appeals to that audience.

 

Have not seen "Oppenheimer" but I would bet a good amount of money this film would have been much better and much more interesting had it been a straight-up, non-fiction, documentary...instead of whatever he made with actors and fictional dialogue.

Tween to 25 year old girls AND boys, all with disposable income, are flocking to this movie.

Not only are you criticizing a movie you have not seen but you are proposing improvements?!? 

 

I didn't actually read your whole post but it was stupid and could have been improved by replacing all of the words with new ones.

I saw Barbie and IMO, it is a bad movie.  A bizarre, cynical movie, with a mean-spirited undertone.  It doesn't like anybody, man, woman or the Barbie doll, and it makes all of the characters unlikeable in the end.  The theater was mostly silent.  The movie mentions the "cognitive dissonance of the patriarchy" at least 20 times.  Bizarre monologue by America Ferrarra, dance scene by Ryan Gosling.    I don't think all the kids in attendance had any idea what was going on.  It's really more like an art house film.  

 

Haven't seen Oppenheimer.  

 

MI7 was very good.  I enjoyed the science fiction angle of the story, but the way Paramount moved the story around falls short - the beginning should have been at the end, like originally scripted.  Paramount did it no favors releasing it on a Wednesday afternoon.

TENET: 7.3, 69% (I believe most people simply didn't grasp the movie)

Dunkirk: 7.8, 92%

Interstellar: 8.7, 73% (one of my favorite movies)

The Dark Knight Rises: 8.4, 87%

Inception: 8.8, 87%

The Dark Knight: 9.0, 94% (arguably, the greatest comic book movie of all-time. May never be overtaken)

The Prestige: 8.6, 86%

Batman Begins: 8.2, 84%

Insomnia: 7.2, 92%

Memento: 8.4, 93%

Following: 7.5, 82%

 

He never fails in his films. Nominated for five Academy Awards and every one of his movies end up winning the "AFI Movies of the Year". Interstellar, with the help of Kip Thorne, accurately predicted what an actual black hole looks like. Dude is a flat out genius.

my wife and sister in law took our daughter and niece to see barbie...the girls are 8-10.  it was too "old" for them.  the didn't dislike it, but i think it was just over their heads at this point.  my wife said it was ok, as it was more of a girl power type movie.  they just enjoyed taking the girls out to dinner and a movie, but i haven't heard anyone say they loved.  i'd guess the target audience would be preteen/teen girls and adults the grew up with barbie.  i get it...i was just as excited to see the mario movie as my kids.

Seeing as how it’s been a phenomenon since it was first introduced nearly 65 years ago, I’d say that list of adults who grew up with Barbie would include grandmothers, mothers, daughters, and granddaughters. The sheer size of that market makes it a can’t miss money maker for the studios.

absolutely. i saw a stat that over the last month, all things related barbie,(even pink items) have increased in sales by almost 600%.

Wife and I saw Oppenheimer in IMAX Saturday. The acting, especially Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. is tremendous. Oscar worthy. But as a whole, the movie wasn't at the same level. Also 3 hours is too long. 

 

Meanwhile my daughter saw Barbie and highly recommends it. It's not meant to be a kids movie.

Neither movie is one I want to see badly. If I had to pick one I'd go with Oppenheimer, but its likely we won't see it in the theater...I usually draw the line at 2 1/4 hours for a movie lenght to watch in the theater.  3 hours for a movie, add 20 more for previews...just too long for me to sit in a seat in a theater.  Wife wants to see Barbie so I'll probably give in and go see that with her. Oppenheimer will be a must-watch, just at home in a few months.
