Basically if McD is unable to coach a game - Wash takes the headset as the HC for the game.

Likely true. But a more practical change will be when McDermott needs to devote extra time in the defensive huddles, he’ll have his right-hand man picking up HC responsibilities.

Oh snap, he's growing that Lovie Smith beard.

How is he growing a Lovie Smith beard? It's nowhere even close to similar. Cause it's gray on a black man's face?

McDermott probably feels like, with his move to calling the defense this season, he'd like to have someone trusted he can lean on to step in for him when needed and do some of the things that a head coach does.

For those suggesting it should've been someone on the offensive side, who would you suggest? Ken Dorsey wouldn't make sense because, for one thing, he's got enough on his plate trying to grow as an offensive coordinator and, for two, he might be up in the booth on gamedays, not on the sideline. Aside from him, who would you pick? Kromer? Hide your beach chairs!

That's my question to anyone that complains about this move -- and there WILL be (and already have been) complainers. If not Eric Washington, who would you have picked instead?

I don't really care, since it's just a title.

However, I do find it odd that they would promote someone, even ceremoniously, while his unit underperforms yearly.

Knowing the NFL, they are going to do a fluff piece for the start of the season to show how much more “inclusive” they got and needed some extra promotions to talk about.  If you see more of these it will be all to obvious.

Second in the NFL last year giving up 17.9 points/game despite being decimated by injuries (including in the playoffs). But you feel free to be you.

Please don’t embarrass yourself by mentioning 13 seconds.

Promoting a guy who's in charge of the unit with maybe the worst ROI in the entire league. Despite 4 top 60 picks, including a top 10, numerous high end FA signings, and a league high expenditure, DL continues to be a weakness of this team that needs constant addressing.

Washington should have been fired a long time ago. Working for McDermott seems like a pretty sweet gig. Once you're in, you're in - Except for that safeties coach I guess.

It's why Leslie Frazier is still our DC.  It's still why Rick Dennison is our OC.

Growing. The "ing" signifies he's in the process of something. They teach prefix and suffix usage and meanings in like...3rd grade.

I disagree, AJ Espensa went to a less than 2 sack guy to a guy with 6.5 sacks last season. Also think we've have seen good things from Kingsley Jonathan etc. Yes, others haven't developed but it's not always the coaches fault.

how many of those sacks came when Von was out?  Or in the Bengals game against a backup OL.  The DL  was PUTRID when it mattered most, and Basham and Groot were not great when Von was out.

Frazier stayed much longer than he should have.  The 13 seconds should have been his exit.  Then he was never fired, he left after then Bengal debacle.

Fair points, but this assumes there was a need for this position/job responsibility during game day.

Second: would have preferred Holcomb, Shula, Brady, or Babich (in no particular order).   I'd rather Washington focus on continuing  trying to improve the DL.

Completely agree.

Beane likely thought they were a Von Miller away, along with the excuse of losing Tre White that season, but in hindsight he should have known Frazier's defense is not going to work against Burrow/Mahomes.

Texans WC second half collapse.

The defense got carved up by Rivers the next year in the 4th Quarter, but Allen outdueled him.  Then we got boat raced by KC in the AFCCG.

Two strong postseason performances..  One in a winter hurricane against Lamar Jackson, and the other in 4 degrees against Mac Jones.

Then 13 seconds happened.

We know Frazier dominates limited QB's.  His defense did it twice in weather games.  In normal weather, against more talented QB's, his defense was a liability 4 times.  Second half vs Deshaun Watson.  4th Quarter vs Phillip Rivers.  Mahomes twice.

In retrospect, that was enough sample size to see that Frazier is not the guy when it comes to the postseason.

I'm not sure it would've been much different, given the injuries we sustained last year, but between the struggle session against Skylar Thompson, followed by Burrow toying with us, Frazier was here one year too long.

As you said, there was enough data for 13 seconds to be the breaking point.

Thanks for the response.

Your "preferred candidates" list is fair.

I can't help but wonder if McDermott being added to the defensive coaching "room" is the reason he felt more comfortable giving extra responsibilities to a coach from that side of the ball. In other words, if he has to tab someone to take on extra duties -- thus potentially sacrificing/forgoing a bit of their own usual duties at times -- it makes more sense for it to be a defensive coach, since McDermott himself is potentially doing some of that defensive stuff now.

If that's the case, then I do agree that Babich may have been a good choice. Perhaps his never having had defensive coordinator experience before, as Eric Washington has, is what kept him from being the choice.
