Washington has been the Bills' defensive line coach since 2020; he has helped the defense finish 1st in points per game allowed in 2021 (17.0) and 4th in 2022 (19.1). Ahead of the 2022-23 season, Washington was promoted to senior defensive assistant. In addition to being the assistant head coach in the 2023-24 season, Washington will continue his role as Buffalo's defensive line coach. Interesting... 2 2 Quote
MWK Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 (edited) Should be fired instead for the consistent underperformance and lack of development. This promotion just goes to show you what being friends with McDermott can do for you. Edited June 21, 2023 by MWK 4 2 7 5 3 2 1 3 Quote
DaggersEOD Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 (edited) Really would rather an Assistant Head Coach on the O side of the ball personally... Edited June 21, 2023 by DaggersEOD Clarity 1 4 Quote
BuffaloBillyG Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 I heard it's actually Assistant TO the Head Coach 2 15 6 Quote
The Jokeman Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Just now, MWK said: Should be fired instead for the consistent underperformance and lack of development. I disagree, AJ Espensa went to a less than 2 sack guy to a guy with 6.5 sacks last season. Also think we've have seen good things from Kingsley Jonathan etc. Yes, others haven't developed but it's not always the coaches fault. 5 2 Quote

Although some of that falls on Beane for poor drafting. This promotion just goes to show you what being friends with McDermott can do for you. …more specifically, what being a defensive coach under McDermott can do for you. 3 1 Quote
DJB Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Perfect. He takes Leslie’s old role and Bills and Pats get some comp picks if he gets hired elsewhere 4 2 1 Quote

Ethan in Cleveland Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Odd move. Usually this is done to protect them from leaving for a coordinator job somewhere else. I beleive the assistant HC title means Bills can block interviews for DC. He doesn't seem like a guy that would be on anyone's list for a DC job but who knows. Quote

Heathcliff Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 A ton of resources provided over the past several years and, in most of our eyes, a unit chronically underperforming. Hmmmm…… 3 1 Quote
Royale with Cheese Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 (edited) It's just a title and nothing actually changes. Eric Bienemy was RB coach and an "Assistant Head Coach" with the Vikings. A guy named Jon Embree is the Assistant HC and Tight Ends coach with the Dolphins. Anthony Weaver is the DL and Assistant HC with the Ravens. Edited June 21, 2023 by Royale with Cheese 1 1 Quote
Heavy Kevi Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Well if there was ANY speculation that Frasier was going to return, this should put it to bed. 21 minutes ago, Ethan in Cleveland said: Odd move. Prob trying to lock in consistency on D after Leslie's exit. I wonder if not naming a DC and not "firing" Frazier could end in bills still getting a comp pick if he gets a HC gig? Could be a reason it ended in this bizzarre, vague way of "taking a year off" 1 Quote

NewEra Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 (edited) Yet another reason why McDermott is a terrible HC. This guy can’t do anything right!! For crying out loud Sean, do something right for once!!! Edited June 21, 2023 by NewEra 1 4 1 Quote

Not just the friends thing, but the underperformance part as well. 2 1 Quote
