PIZ Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 8 year veteran could add some quality depth or possibly start. NFL.com
Like A Mofo Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Not a terrible thought, and it wouldnt hurt bringing in a player who knows the Jets system
stevestojan Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 link to why he was cut? was it just for roster space? pussywillow blows a goat.
PIZ Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 Here's your link Steve, and it sounds like he would be a good pickup. Jets Insider Jets release offensive lineman Smith. In a somewhat surprising move, the team announced that they have released veteran G/T Brent Smith. Smith, an 8 year pro originally signed with the Jets last season as a backup but the sudden retirement of Tom Nutten forced him into the starting lineup where he did a solid job filling in. Coming into camp this season, Smith was expected to resume his starting role but was forced into a battle as a starter when the team acquired Pete Kendall at the beginning of camp. He was eventually beat out by second year man Brandon Moore at the right guard spot. The move is a bit of a shock considering the Jets very thin depth at the position. The only reserve guard on the depth chart at present is Jonathan Goodwin who is actually now the reserve center behind Kevin Mawae. Word coming out of camp is that the move was salary cap motivated. If Smith was active on the Jets opening day roster the team would have been responsible for his entire $550K salary. However, by releasing him they can re-sign him next week and only be responsible for his weekly salary while he is on the roster. Still, with many teams looking to bolster their offensive line depth the Jets are taking a big risk that he may be claimed on the waiver wire.
BillsGuyInMalta Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 ANYONE being brought in that will result in Pussywillow being cut is okay in my books.
Mustang Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 six years with the fish then cut and only one with the jets and then kicked to the curb- something is wrong with him either physically or mentally.

BillsFanInTexas Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 My guess is that the Jests didn't want to guarantee his salary for the year. Before week 1, any veteran on the roster has a guaranteed salary for the year. After week one, any veteran who signs with a team is not guaranteed salary for the year.

Mustang Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 He played line for Miami - how good could he be? 26104[/snapback] good point- maybe he smoked up with Ricky.
LabattBlue Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Brent Smith is just one of those guys who appears to be good, but it's really just the system he's in. If he came here, it would be a big letdown!
Amstel Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 I say bring him in and Fontenot too. We have no depth. Our line isn't that good and only gets worse with injuries. If we can afford guys at the vet min and they'll take it sign them.......
