Great to see pro-rock get a little bit of love, since Rolling Stone hasn't covered it since 1974.

Robert Fripp, Steve Howe, nice!

If they were using pure technical skill, John Petrucci of Dream Theater would be #1. That guy can shred like nobody's business.

On a total different style, Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues has a great style. You hear it, and you know its him.

Steve Hackett, who used to be in Genesis when they were good, is the same way.

They should have done the list based on who has had the most influence on others.  About a third of the current group would be immediately eliminated.

Some dude from Fleetwood Mac is on the list but Allan Holdsworth and Joe Satriani aren't?  Please.

It is great to see another poster who appreciates the talented Allan Holdsworth. I love his stuff on the first UK album and his efforts with Tony Williams and Jean-Luc-Ponty.

How him on the first record from supergroup U.K.?

"In the Dead of Night" rocks!

The list is totally disjointed. Is it top-100 most influential? Technically proficient? Bluesy? Best song-writers? Sadly that list doesn't fit ANY of those. I'd say it's the top-100 guitarists who were randomly drawn from a hat.

I'd also add Eric Johnson. It takes him about a decade to put out an album, but he's probably the most technically gifted guitarist I've heard, and that includes Petrucci.

Kurt Cobain #12

Jerry Garcia #13...........

I believe that says it all......

BTW SRV should be top 5 on any list of guitar players. Albert King said he is the greatest he has ever seen.....

Where's Prince, for that matter?

Not that I like his music (though I will admit, Purple Rain has aged like a fine wine).  But he is a very good guitar player, certainly better than The Edge...

You could probably say Prince for a number of instruments. The guy not only can play a bunch of different instruments (over 20 different ones), but can play most of them as well as anyone, including guitar, piano, bass, and drums. I guess that''s the reason the major labels were in a bidding war to sign him when he was just 17 years old.

Purple Rain is a very good album, though I still prefer his early works, especially Dirty Mind.

Not to mention he has a wicked crossover dribble.

Not only that, but his compositional skills are phenomenal. "Manhattan" off Venus Isle is one of the best compositions I've ever heard (right up there with Hendrix's best stuff). There's a few out there who are technically better than Johnson...but no better composers with the guitar that I've ever heard.

I'm going to have to revisit Eric Johnson based on your and some of the other comments made here. To me, he was always very good technically but sounded very "plastic" and dated. I must have missed out on a wider sample of his compositions... I'll try again.

My guess is that he's saying how screwed up it is that they'd list Cobain as a guitarist ahead of Garcia. I don't think he's making fun of him.

The more I look at this list, the more I think that it might be the worst "greatest of all time/ranking" list ever done. It should not even have been attempted. I am guessing that the main goal was to create controversy and buzz in order to sell magazines.

I guess that's what you can expect, when it takes you a year per song...in the recording studio.

The "tone ranger" is always striving to sound like Jimi.

Steve Vai is technically excellent. However I never got into his stuff. Same with Yinyang Malmsteen.

Speaking of which, I loved that "headcutting duel" at the end of "Crossroads." Sure it didn't make sense (resorting to classical guitar in a blues guitar duel :D ), but if I didn't know about Vai at the time, I never would have thought someone could play like that.

Cobain should rate an honorable mention at best.

Don't you peons know that in addition to my sterling record as an executive of the highest order, that I am also a clasically trained guitarist?

Doubt me? Better not, if you want to keep that scrawny paycheck coming.

:D
