it is actually German.   It is Bavarian but has been modified for French.

There are a lot of variants in spelling of name  (Guggemos is most common spelling) and most of the people (1,419 of 1,999 at latest census) with that exact last name live in Bavaria.

I am Hessian and Prussian and have seen it in documents but that is all the info I have.
