Because everyone knows borrowing to infinity has consequences and is fiscally reckless. But they choose to ignore these consequences. Because businesses and citizens demand their free stuff. Or they'll vote for somebody else that promises to continue running the gravy train. What facilitates this marvelous arrangement of living well beyond our means is the dollar reserve and trade settlement system. Slowly but surely that is coming to an end in a form not totally clear. When the tipping point is reached the party's over. Ummm, no. It's the GOP MAGA Rump that wags the dog. There's no debate on that because everyone knows its true except the MAGA propagandists 1

Better to make some voluntary hard choices now than to face an emergency where options will be few and far between, none of which will be pleasant. We simply cannot indefinitely borrow our way to prosperity. 2 1

This game of financial make-believe has to stop. 1 2
Tommy Callahan Posted September 29, 2023 Posted September 29, 2023 The fear monger voices are out hard on social media today. "The shutdown will stop SS checks." ChiGoose Posted September 29, 2023 Posted September 29, 2023 These are deeply unserious people... McCarthy’s Temporary Spending Bill Fails to Pass the House "Hard-line conservatives on Friday tanked Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s long-shot bid to pass legislation to avert a government shutdown, in an extraordinary display of defiance that made it all but certain that Congress would miss a midnight deadline on Saturday to keep federal funding flowing. It appeared clear even before the vote that the stopgap bill was all but certain to fail, as several hard-right Republicans had declared that they would not back a temporary spending bill under any circumstances. Mr. McCarthy, bracing for political blowback for a government closure, had scheduled it anyway in hopes of showing he was trying to avoid the crisis. But the decision by right-wing lawmakers to effectively blow up one final effort by Mr. McCarthy to give the appearance of trying to head off a shutdown dealt the speaker a stinging defeat, and left politically vulnerable Republicans fuming. The bill failed by a vote of 198-232, with 21 Republicans joining all Democrats to defeat it. The measure, which would have kept government funding flowing at vastly reduced levels — cutting spending to most domestic programs by nearly 30 percent — and impose stringent immigration restrictions demanded by conservatives, would not have prevented a shutdown even if it had passed the House, because it was considered dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate."

Nice partisan summary from the NYT. any details to the sticking points that made the proposal so bad?

You could actually try reading for once. I even provided a link. I know it's tough, but if you try hard enough, maybe you can pull it off. Anyway, for the actual adults capable of rational thought, remember that the House bill would be dead if it actually passed anyway because we have a divided government. When there's a divided government, recognizing your limitations leads to negotiation and compromise. The Senate passed a funding bill 77-19 on Tuesday, a bipartisan win. Unfortunately, it won't mean much because McCarthy isn't smart enough to be able to control the petulant children that current run his caucus.

Kick the can down the road a couple more miles? Until next time and then kick it some more? Keep borrowing trillions until the interest payments on the national debt consumes the entire Federal budget? Something needs to give. Either raise the tax rate to something like 75% or stop borrowing or both.

Either raise the tax rate to something like 75% or stop borrowing or both. Neither party seems to care too much about it. The GOP talks a big game but when they are in charge, they run up the debt as much as anyone. We need serious electoral reforms to get real adults into congress who actually respond to the people, but in the meantime, we have to deal with what we have. A short-term CR to allow more time to negotiate a long-term plan should be a layup here. Also, these shutdown antics end up hurting the debt because they negatively impact our credit rating. When the US's credit rating is downgraded, it increases the cost of debt service.
BillsFanNC Posted September 29, 2023 Posted September 29, 2023 I stand to lose a substantial sale with the shutdown. I have a large government agency committed to purchase two very expensive research instruments, and a shutdown might scuttle the entire thing. If they'd shut it down for 6+ months I'd gladly be on board to forfeit the huge sale. But alas, this is all just swamp creature posturing and it will last only a short time before they're all back at the trough together. And The King as usual is a fuk.cing moron. 1

While it is possible, and likely to have an effect if this keeps occurring, it hasn't had any real effect to date. 1 1

B-Man Posted September 30, 2023 Posted September 30, 2023 ADULTS ??? While House Democrats were attempting to adjourn until Monday, despite a looming government shutdown, they got a little assist when a fire alarm sounded in the Cannon House Office Building, forcing an evacuation. Unfortunately for them, Politico is reporting that Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) is the person who pulled it, and that he's on film doing so. https://redstate.com/jenvanlaar/2023/09/30/new-rep-jamaal-bowman-reportedly-caught-on-camera-pulling-fire-alarm-n2164519
B-Man Posted September 30, 2023 Posted September 30, 2023 Well, another lefty narrative blown. CNN — The House has passed a bipartisan bill to avert a government shutdown just hours ahead of a midnight deadline, setting up a Senate vote over funding the US federal government for another 45 days. The bill, which includes the natural disaster aid that the White House requested, must now be approved by the Senate before the end of the day Saturday, in order to prevent a lapse in funding. The bill does not include $6 billion in funding to aid Ukraine, a key concession that many House Republicans demanded and a blow to allies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who lobbied Congress earlier this month for additional assistance. Democrats in the House have been trying to slow down passage of the GOP-led continuing resolution throughout the day Saturday, objecting to being forced to vote on a bill just introduced and wanting to keep Ukraine aid. It’s unclear how long Democrats will stall the House from voting. https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/30/politics/us-government-shutdown-latest/index.html
