Airseven Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 McDermott reminds me of the Monty Williams situation with the Phoenix Suns. He was the right guy to change a culture and to build a team back to national relevance. A good guy, competitor, stabilizer. But he’s not the right guy to push a team over the top once the standard elevates and peers become the best coaches and players in the sport. He gets outclassed. 1 Quote
Dr.Sack Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 McDermott has a chance to prove his haters wrong. Lots of coaches run the offense and coach. McD can do the same. Quote

What was your opinion of Andy Reid as a coach in 2016? Just read this: (In 2013) Reid went on to lead the Chiefs to a 9–0 record to start the season, tied for the best start in franchise history.[71] Despite losing five of their last seven games, the Chiefs finished with an 11–5 record to clinch a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs. In the wild card round, they were defeated by the Indianapolis Colts 45–44 after surrendering a 28-point lead in the third quarter.[72][73] Under Reid, the Chiefs recorded a winning record in the 2014 season, finishing 9–7. However, they failed to qualify for the playoffs.[74] In 2015, the Chiefs were in danger of missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year after they lost five straight games to begin the season 1–5. Reid accepted the blame for his team's poor start[75] and his future with the Chiefs was called into question.[76] However, the Chiefs won every remaining regular-season game, finishing with an 11–5 record and a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs.[77] Reid would go on to lead the Chiefs to their first playoff win since the 1993 season in a 30–0 shutout of the Houston Texans,[78] but the team was defeated 20–27 in their Divisional Round game against the New England Patriots.[79] Prior to the loss, the Chiefs posted an eleven-game winning streak, which is the best in franchise history.[80] Reid was criticized for his clock management near the end of the game, calling no timeouts in a late fourth-quarter drive that cut the Patriots' 27–13 lead down to a touchdown but took the Chiefs 5 minutes and 16 seconds to score and left them with only a minute and 13 seconds to try and tie the game.[81] Reid improved in the regular season with the 2016 Chiefs, who finished with a 12–4 record and clinched their division for the first time since 2010, as well as for the first time under Reid.[82] The Chiefs went undefeated against their AFC West rivals to secure the division title on a tiebreaker with the 12–4 Oakland Raiders and obtain a first-round bye in the playoffs as the AFC's second seed.[83] The bye was the Chiefs' first since 2003. Despite the team's regular-season success, the Chiefs were eliminated in the Divisional Round for a second consecutive year in an 16–18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although the Chiefs were able to prevent the Steelers from scoring any touchdowns, they were unable to match the six field goals Pittsburgh converted.[84] The Chiefs started strong during the 2017 season, winning their first five games to become the NFL's last remaining undefeated team, including a victory against defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots in the kickoff game.[85][86] After their strong start, the Chiefs lost six of their next seven games, resulting in Reid conceding playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Nevertheless, the Chiefs won their last four games to finish 10–6 and clinch the AFC West for a second consecutive year, the first back-to-back division titles in franchise history.[87] However, the team ultimately suffered a sixth consecutive home playoff loss in a 21–22 defeat against the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card Round. Despite holding a 21–3 lead at halftime, the Chiefs were shut out during the second half as the Titans scored 19 unanswered points to win the game.[88] Edited May 28, 2023 by Dr. K 3 Quote

No, Hard disagree. This is where I think your thinking is flawed. So many Bills fans are satisfied with great regular season records, AFC titles, and playoff appearances only to lose early. Of course it's better than the past decades of Bills failures. No one is denying that. However, I don't think it's unreasonable for Bills fans to expect and want more. Like a Super Bowl appearence and a Lombardi Trophy. You have arguably the top 3 QB in the league with some very nice weapons on both sides of the ball. Imho, it's a realistic that the Bills should be advancing further. Past decades of failure really shouldn't be used to justify or lower fans expectations and results of the current team. Sadly, I think too many Bills fans have this mindset. 1 Quote

Not many could instill the culture change in an undesirable location and completely flip the script. Game management was a problem that lies on him. It has improved. He is average at best here. Defensive scheme has been a problem that over the last few years McD would step in front of Frasier and fix. Last year he didn’t and the team noticeably suffered. Now Frasier is gone. If he calls the plays on D again I’m sure we will be exceptional again. It’s hard to draw the line between micro managing or not and you can’t blame him for things he let his D coordinator do. He has let the OC do what they want. He has been very aggressive on 4th downs with Josh. Hes a great coach. Whether we go all the way has more to do with the OC and players than him. He has a culture of winning and that is a hard thing to create. Alot of accurate assessments. His game management has only slightly improved during the regular season. But I still have little faith in him outscoring teams during the playoffs. It's as if he relies the his players' athleticism to take over. As a distributor of process, culture and player relationships I would definitely call him great. His 4th aggressiveness is appreciated. I'm excited he's taking control of the defense. There's just this underlying fear His lack of game management (13 sec) will rear it's ugly head and cost us another playoff game. 1 Quote

The Buffalo Bills have a record of 4-4 in the playoffs between May 7, 2018 and May 7, 2023. .500% is all that matters. 0 Super bowls wins, 0 AFC championship wins and he crumbles when the pressure is on and when it matters the most. He is just average by the win % but IMO he is less than average as a coach in the playoffs and his instincts as coach are less than that of his pears, this teams talent has carried him for these wins, not McD's coaching. The last two years when elite coaching was needed and mattered the most, McD and Frazier both laid a big fat goose eggs, we cant even get to the AFC championship game. This year is going to be no gimme, and you think they are a shoe in because they have gone 55-21 in the past 5 seasons...... please..... You like a lot of other McD supporters are blinded by the this whole process BS thing. His process is losing the most important games when it matters, because he does not possess the elite coaching mentality on what it takes to get this team prepared to succeed at the next level, by winning a AFCCG or a SB. GoBills808 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 ^^he might have the elite level coaching chops and just needs time to get there. The real issue is that he's unlikely to get a QB like Allen again and there's no percentage in wasting his career in hopes the coach figures it out eventually. In that regard Reid was lucky to have cut his teeth w McNabb and Smith. Quote

Let’s just keep tweaking to get better every year. Yeah, go to a new coach and he’ll bring in a D coordinator that likes the 3-4, making some of the current D linemen and LBs not suitable and here we go again. They also bring in an O coordinator that wants to run the ball and not take risks in the passing game, despite our All-Pro QB. Quote
