You know what really pisses me off.  When you're going 60 in a 55 and somebody decides to pass you. Once they get in front of you they slow down to 50mph.  WTF are these idiots thinking.

A related rant is people who fly like a bat out of hell to cut you off, like coming out of a parking lot or making a right on red, and then go below the speed limit.

Or or or... guys that crawl along at a snail's pace (dialing) and force you to pass them on the right because they're doing 50 in a 65. Then, they fly past you at 85MPH (connected) in turn, on the right, while you're doing 70.

Things don't happen to you. You let them happen to you. Patience is all you ever need, but if you don't exercise it, you'll just drive around pissed off all the time. They're kids. They're idiots. I fail to believe anyone here was not an idiot behind the wheel when they were a kid.

Good lesson you taught them, though.

You see, the best thing to do, if it were a flat, open road, would be to pull out into the oncoming lane as if you're gonna pass, have them speed up to 100, but then keep it there. If there's oncoming traffic, then duck back behind them, but if it's a clear road for miles, just let them floor it and ride at that speed all the way to your destination.

That, or pull out your 9 and smoke 'em.

I drive at least 50,000 miles a year, and I would say that about 75% of drivers in this country are stupid, oblivious, discourteous, downright dangerous or some combination of the above.

My pet peeve concerns people on multi-lane roads that fart along in the left (passing) lane, holding up traffic, and forcing others to pass them in the right lane. It's a national epidemic.

Speed doesn't kill. Stupid, oblivious driving does.

I believe that’s the right answer. You win the prize.

I drive a 2004 Subaru Forester

It is a question of who was right and wrong and what suggestions could be made from different people out there to help me avoid any confrontations like that in the future

Thanks

You admit to speeding 60 in a 55....maybe they were trying to help you avoid a ticket.

I don't think it's a "young man thing" as much as it is an American thing.

Ever drive on the QEW from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Oh yeah, Canada is in America too.

It's a jerkoff thing. I might have slowed to 50mph to let them get a long way ahead of me. People like that are scary. Like playing with fire.

That's why there are hand guns!

I don't think it's a "young man thing" as much as it is an American thing. I was talking about this last night over dinner at a friends'. No one in this country wants to be passed by -- we're too egotistical. On the autobahn, people don't take it as a personal affront that someone is going faster; they just move over and let the other person pass.

What should you have done? All that so you could be one car in front of them at the next stop light? You could have been patient and driven the speed limit. You'll get to your destination, what, 2 minutes later?

Not sure about the Autobahn but I know in France, you can pass them all day long. You see, they are born with a natural inclination to surrender. Not only that, but to surrender early and often. Sometimes they will just pull over to the side of the road. Need yet another example......see Lance Armstrong.

What can I say, Americans are born with the desire to win.

 Or a Mercedes 500s.... My pal took a picture of the tachometer at 245kph (~125mph?).

Who needs the Autobahn for that? I did that back about 18 years ago in my dad's Porsche 944 turbo going from Rochester to Batavia. The cool thind is my dad was sitting next to me!

Ok...please tell me if I should have done anything different the next time this ever happens to me.

I work in a job that requires auto travel to different facilities.  I am on my way to my next facility one day and I am on a 2 lane rural road and I am doing 60 in a 55mph zone and I am behind this beat up old rusted out POS Dodge van that has 3 men in it....1 driver, 1 passenger and 1 in the back seat.  Their ages range from anywhere from high school to mid 20's.... I come up on them and DO NOT tailgate them but they are doing exactly 55 and I have a dotted line and no traffic the other way so I decide to put my blinker on and pass them by and once by I slow to 60 mph give or take 1-2 miles.

As I start to pass them the driver of the car puts his gas pedal to the floor and forbids me to pass them and tries to avoid me getting by.  My car does not have enough horsepower to beat him while he has it to the floor so I abort and go back behind him and he slows back down to exactly 55mph . He never batted an eye or made any kind of obscene gesture or looked at me ....here I am going to my next job while these punks find it funny to provoke me so I got mad and ended up flipping him off a couple of times *( I know I probably should not have done that but I was pissed that they were playing a dangerous game with me while I was only legally trying to pass them on the left in the oncoming lane).  So I stay behind him a couple of more minutes and try to pass him again thinking it was over but once again while I am trying to get by he floors the gas again and prevents me from passing him.  So I honk the horn and flip him off again while I abort back into the lane again and he slows back down to 55mph.

My question is this:  What did I do to deserve this kind of treatment on the road?  I did nothing to provoke these people from the start, did not tailgate, and tried to pass while I had the dotted line which the last time I checked was legal to do.  I am not an aggressive driver and I am courteous when I can be on the road.  Do young men take it as a personal insult when someone tries to pass them on a road in today's society?  I probably should have ignored them but they were trying to pick a fight to be funny.  Yes I did get angry and fipped them off a few times but only after they tried to get me killed on the road by being childish.  What should I have done differently?

Thanks for your feedback

You should have got a HEMI. Next time pony up the extra coin and you won't have to worry about numbnuts like this. Don't worry too much about them either. They'll end up doing that crap to the wrong guy or guys some day. No worries.

our state passed a law against this and i hope it catches on in other states too. i hate people that think the left lane is their own comfort-cruise lane. i'm convinced one of these times when i'm forced to pass them on the right i'm going to be directly in their blind spot when they decide to merge back... then i suppose the accident will be my fault because i'm not supposed to pass on the right...

That probably wouldn't get passed down south. Too many people would B word. For example:

Is it or is it not against the law for you to drive with your windshield and/or windows obscured by snow accumulation?

I asked a cop in Wilson, NC why they let people get away with it, and he said that if they ticketed people for that, they would all go and complain about frivilous tickets and get it dropped anyway. Go fig...

In your first post you attributed the traits of one driver to all americans.  Do you think that might be over generalizing a bit?

You also called americans egotistical.  That doesn't seem very pro-american.  There are no humble americans/ego maniacal euros?

Are there any good drivers here?  Are there any bad drivers in the all hallowed europe?

There is no doubt that there are many bad drivers.  Some are too speedy/agresssive.  Some are too slow/inattentive.  My bet is that europe has their share too.  I don't think it is because americans are arrogant.

And another thing.....  One thing that proves europeans are bad drivers: they ALL drive on the wrong friggin side of the road.  Morons.

Walk along that famous road in Paris (Champs De Something) and you'll see plenty of bad driving and road rage.

I would just like to say that Road Rage is real......its out there....and unfortunately I have a bad case of it....

But I will admit that I have it.....I try......oh lord I do try to be nice.

348223[/snapback]

It's hard to be nice when they hand out drivers licenses to people with IQs of under 40.

I swear to God, they print them on the back of Wheaties boxes in PA.

But my ALL TIME PET PEEVE on the road is the 4'6" housewife driving an escalade who can't see over the steering wheel and she's talking on the cell phone while yelling at the brats in the back...

That's death on four wheels, right there.

Pet Peeves of mine:

- Drivers driving the "speed limit" on the free way in the friggen fast lane where everyone elses lanes are going faster then him......causing people to have to go around him instead of just choosing a slower lane.

- Woman putting on their makeup in traffic in the fast lane

- The guy/gal who thinks they can fit their full length car into a half of car length space in traffic moving at a high rate of speed....without a turn signal....then feels the need to flip YOU off after they do it.....
