I don’t follow too closely but I think McKinley has already been approved for a “city center” like they are planning for the Boulevard Mall, and the Eastern Hills mall areas. I 100% expect there to be a new hotel on that site. But I also believe something will be in place closer to the stadium with some shops, bars, restaurants. It’s pointless to not capitalize on the opportunity of the new stadium there. The Bills and town don’t make money from drunken idiots chugging Natty Ices behind their cars, they will want something more out of it.

Eastern Hills Mall kicked all of the customers out except those with outside entrances

Fond memories of working in that mall as a teenager. Bought my first pound in an interior hallway at that mall.
Good times.

Here's a question for the really old timers.  What was around the stadium area, before it was built?  I'm thinking of Danny's South, Prohibition, O'Neills, Big Tree.  Were they there before the current stadium was built, under different names, or after?

As I understand it downtown was going to cost more and take up to two years more to go through the process of buying properties paying for them and then knocking them down. A lid on the place was another Billion. So you finally have a new stadium two years latter that somebody has to pay 2b for. Think prices are high now, watch think double.

They still push the edge! I walked in there while getting my wife’s watch battery changed. It felt all nostalgic going in, it has that feel. I immediately realized it was NOT appropriate to take any grandkid who could read. It’s gotten raunchy.

What was edgy then only had so far to go before it was TOO far. I mean, how far can you push it in a retail mall. The world is a very different place.

Sadly, this is true

Can you imagine the PSL cost of they put that thing downtown?

There are already people bemoaning the fact they can’t afford to keep Grandpa’s 1960s season tickets. A downtown stadium would price out even more of the existing season ticket base.

I had to laugh at this part because this is literally a very common complaint floating around WNY right now...and it is so Buffalo

That does not answer my question.  Were there bars/restaurants already in the area, or did they come during/after the stadium being built?

Big Tree opened in 1950. Not sure about the others.

Who cares honestly? It’s a small dumpy bar in the middle of nowhere. Nothing special about it in any way. If it wasn’t for the stadium it would be a barn in a field.

Well, they are trying to build a big league stadium for the most popular sport in the country, and it’s too expensive for you. Can’t have it both ways.

just because they are building it doesn’t mean it isn’t small thinking. They are doing it all wrong from the start. Shouldn’t be in OP. Shouldn’t be open air.

And, Never said I couldnt afford it. I said it’s stupid to pay the kind of money they are asking. Especially when I won’t be here for 30 years of it.

I’m not sorry for telling it like it is. I used to think Buffalo always got a bad rap too. Then I woke up and realized how and why they always did. Because like @PromoTheRobot said, Buffalo, Think small, be small. It’s the way.

So, they should have done it right and possibly doubled the cost, and it’s stupid to pay for the far more affordable option? If they had done it “right”, would you have felt better about paying far more? Or, is there just no winning with you?

My preference was downtown, but it’s not happening so I’ll just be happy they are in WNY.

Stupid paying for the more affordable option is subject to the person buying the tickets. I personally believe it’s stupid as I will not be around for 30 years to go to games. But yes, they should have chose the more expensive option.

Regardless, it still doesn’t take away from the point that was made and that I commented on.

The fact is the only reason Buffalo got a new stadium at all is the income tax from the players and the sales tax from the games made it a reasonable expenditure.  They didn’t have to buy up a lot of downtown/waterfront real estate, and greatly modify the infrastructure that would have been a lot more costly downtown. If downtown Buffalo was already a hub for entertainment activity, putting the stadium there would have made more sense.

I wonder how often all the people clamoring for a downtown stadium actually go down there now. I bet it’s a very small number. Ten single day events a year is just not worth the cost of putting it there. If there was an economic incentive to do it, you better believe it would be there.

So you never go to Sabres or Bandits games? You never go into the bars and restaurants around Key Bank Center beforehand? 🙄
