Was it worth us trading up in the first and losing our 4th round pick?

345 members have voted

  1. 1. Considering the players still available and what we gave up, was trading our 4th round pick worth moving up two slots to draft Dalton Kincaid?

    • Yes, it WAS worth it!
    • No, it is NOT worth what we gave up!

Ok so Im like many of us Bills Mafians. I HATE the thought that we traded up unnecessarily for a pick Beane decided to make in earlier drafts. Welp here we are again, another draft, another trade up in the first. Some of Beane's previous trade ups were understandable while many others were highly questionable. FOR THIS SPECIFIC TRADE UP, do you feel Beane was completely justified? Even if you believe the Cowboys would have indeed selected Kincaid and for us to get him, trading up was necessary. If you dont feel the pick was worth the sacrifice, STILL VOTE NO. So my polling question here is, DO YOU FEEL THE TRADE UP IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE 2023 DRAFT WAS WORTH IT? Put your current opinion on the matter on the record RIGHT NOW!

Kincaid is an elite weapon, so yes.

there were not alot of players left on the board with a 1st rd grade

so the move up for a weapon on the O side of the ball works for me

4th rd pick be damned

Yes, the difference in value was 40 pts, our 4th rounder was worth 42 pts. We wanted a specific player, the team before us was long attached to the player. We made a move and drafted the player we wanted. Why don't you just add more instructions to this poll and tell everyone to vote not. Or better yet, just remove the option to vote yes. The question is valid, your attempt to get everyone to agree with you is not great.

I'm going with a soft 'no', because there were still a lot of great players on the board, and this was something of a luxury pick. Don't get me wrong, I like the player a lot, but he will have to make a pretty big impact for this to be a square deal. As with all draft picks, we don't know if that will pan out.

I feel like the only alternative was to trade back there and we would not really have a chance at a high impact offensive player

Entusiasm runs high this time of year.

I remember the euphoria over Oliver and how he was the next Aaron Donald, and Cook last year, that he wouldn't just be another role player, yet many were hoping for a RB and still are in rounds 2 or 3.  And Rousseau.

We'll see what happens, but rookie TEs typically don't make an immediate impact.  I'm not sure how many more years Beane and McD have left before cries for their replacements begin to surface.

For now talk is cheap and the sky's the limit.

Time will tell as it always does.  But going by popular opinion here is meaningless.

Wow ok so after 20 minutes it has become CLEAR it's not even close and that Bills Mafia feels Beane was completely justified by the move up this year. I created this poll because last year I felt it was purely "getting antsy"  and was unnecessary for Bean to trade away assets for Elam. I also with the camp that this year, he ABSOLUTELY was warranted and wasnt "seeing ghosts" on this trade and made the absolutely beast mode chess move. Of course how Kincaid pans out will ultimately judge this decision, but I definitely wanted to capture the overall feelings of the mafia during the immediate aftermath.

Below are our 4th round picks in the last 15 years.  Which ones would you not trade to get the player you absolutely wanted in the draft?  Gabriel Davis for sure.  Only Bradham and Johnson were even decent players on this list.  Its fine.  Don't lose sleep over it.  You can quibble over the player if you want.  Maybe they should have done it earlier to get a WR.  But don't quibble over the strategy and the loss of a 4th.

Gabriel Davis

Taron Johnson

Cardale Jones

Ross Cockerel

Duke Williams

Nigel Bradham

Ron Brooks

Da'Norris Searcy

Chris Harriston

Marcus Easley

Shawn Nelson

Reggie Corner

Derrick Nelson

Dwayne Wright

It was a good trade, the cost to go after the WRs was apparently higher than we wanted to pay. The choice of taking the top rated player in the positional group vs the 3rd or 4th based on this wr class was a no brainer imo. Elite hands and if we believe beane at his word, he will mostly be a pass catcher, it lessens the developmental aspect you traditionally see with TEs. That doesn't mean he doesn't have to learn to block, but it seems the priority in his training and development will be on route running, reading defenders and making the same route tree decision josh does.

If you take most of the targets we used last year on Isiah, Crowder, Singletary, and beasely and give them to Kincaid, that's a sizeable workload.

To be fair Rousseau and cook still have the opportunity to be absolute beasts. They were both trending upwards last season for sure.

cook pretty much wrestled the starting job away from singletary and made him expendable…I think calling him a role player is a bit underselling it.

book has probably been written on Ed oliver though…he seems to be destined to be a pretty good dt but nothing special

Pay better attention. The answer to this was everywhere - even casually mentioned in many articles

Cowboys were going to take him.

They said they had the DT from Michigan higher than any TE which also means they probably didn't have Kincaid #1 out of the TE's. The only person that said they wanted Kincaid was Skip Bayless who has no affiliation with the team, he was just hoping they would get him as a fan

If it's true that he was the last 1st round talent left on their board and Jerruh wanted him, yes it was absolutely necessary to trade up to get him.  Whether he was worth the 25th pick, much less the extra 4th rounder, remains to be seen.

so they have picked twice out of 7 years in the McBean era and two good players ..

Whaley couldn’t pick anyone anywhere let alone in the 4th..

Ok well I agree with it so what must I pay better attention to? I'm just getting folks on record now cause the whole trade up thing is a very polarizing topic.

Actually, re: Rousseau that's not true.  Look at his game logs.  His best game was vs. Miami and he petered out after an early start.  Someone a while back said that as soon as Miller went out he began trending downward, but it happened before that.  He came out of the gates swinging for the first 4 games than played like JAG.

We'll see on Cook, he's never even approached carrying the ball full-time, and while he got more carries, about twice as many, in the 2nd half of the season, he was still a role player.  Whether or not the team lets him shake that is up to Dorsey I suppose.  I'd like to see what he can do.  Then again, they brought in Himes and never used him as they said they would when they traded for him.

Our problems are more coaching than anything else.
