Draconator
https://www.mlb.com/athletics/news/a-s-buy-land-in-las-vegas-for-future-ballpark Quote The A’s have signed a binding agreement to purchase 49 acres of land in Las Vegas, which they plan to utilize as the site of their future new ballpark. Looking to finalize a stadium deal by the January 2024 deadline imposed by Major League Baseball, A’s team president Dave Kaval said the club is directing its full attention to Southern Nevada after the process to build a new waterfront ballpark in Oakland has stalled over the past year. Las Vegas is always a fun time and the A's will add to that, but damn. So many friendships are more were made in Oakland at A's games. It's a shame both sides couldn't get the Howard Terminal deal done. Edited April 20, 2023 by Draconator
Gregg
First the Golden Knights, then the Raiders, and now the A's. Only a matter of time before the NBA goes there.
BillsPride12
How come Oakland can't hang on to any of it's teams anymore?
Draconator
2 minutes ago, BillsPride12 said: How come Oakland can't hang on to any of it's teams anymore? The mayors of Oakland wanted to keep the Raiders and the A's. Outside interests file lawsuits against the stadium projects for environmental and other BS reasons, which delays the negotiations, and extremely draws out the process. Then the Raiders and now the A's get love from another city, and the Mayor badmouths the teams. The A's and the City had a solid agreement to build a new stadium on a city 2-year college campus about 3 or 4 years ago. Then at the last minute, the board of directors at the college shot that deal down after they had originally agreed to it. So like I said, some other entity outside of the teams and the city leaders screw this up.

DrW
5 minutes ago, ExiledInIllinois said: Why is LA still The Lakers? That is easy. They wanted LA in the name, but LAers is too difficult to pronounce. Thus, they tried all possible consonants between the A and the E. "Lacers" sounds like a company producing ladies' underwear, "Lagers" would be a beer. The exclusion of "Lamers" or "Laters" is self-explanatory, "Laxers" is a good name for constipation remedy. Thus, "Lakers" was the best choice left. And nature seems to help them, if some of the results of the recent torrential rains in California stay permanently.

They both would have been acceptable alternatives for my hypothesis. My, admittedly rather lame, excuse is that "lasers" or "lazers" could also be a name representing ophthalmologists doing LASIK surgery. Completely independent of this discussion, but inspired by mentioning "ophthalmologists". I always thought I had good or at least acceptable vision, until last August when the ophthalmologist found cataracts in both eyes, more pronounced in the right. I had surgery on the right eye at the end of January, and the difference is like night and day. My vision is so much clearer now. And the surgery did not even interrupt my work schedule. I was able to give my biochemistry class the day after the surgery. The left eye will follow in June, after the classes for this semester are over.

We did. Apparently it’s more like Oakland used to be. Landing in Paris sounds like an great adventure. My son’s crowd all wanted to live in NYC after graduating. But bigger cities have the bigger jobs, if that’s what you are looking for.

Cities like Vegas come in, and say "We don't have anyone who's going to file a lawsuit over bird migration practices, and we'll give you whatever you want". Done deal. As for the Warriors, the owners funded the $1.4 Billion Dollar Arena. They were dead set against Oakland right from the start. They wanted the arena in the City of San Francisco, and that's exactly what they got.
