Now if by chance our OC plans in utilizing ALL available weapons in his “scheme” then a TE could well be a good move, but according to what gets bandied around on this board, that a TE takes two to three years to develop…, I’m thinking WR or the best damn O-lineman that can start immediately, would still be the better choices. But we all know it’s going to be an Edge rusher…, 😁👍 GO BILLS!!! Pitchforks and knives will be out in full force for Beane's head if this is the case. Quote
blacklabel Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Another solid TE would be helpful. People are on the OC about Knox not being as involved as he was in 2021. That was a product of him being the most reliable TE in the roster and being asked to chip and block more frequently than he had in seasons past. Get someone else out there to split the duties and that'll open up things more for Knox. Quote

But if there's a run on them and there isn't someone Beane liked and there's someone like Dalton Kincaid or Michael Mayer on the board - I'd be happy with it. Unless Beane likes Drew Sanders and he's on the board still, the value isn't there at 27 for a MLB. Trade up from 59 for Edmunds replacement, if MLB starts moving before then. Shouldn't cost much in this Draft. What if Beane/McD like Campbell better? And the quote "the value isn't there for a MLB" gets thrown around a lot. Edmunds just went for $18M/yr. If the FO gets a starter of that quality, it seems like huge value - that's DHop money (and more than any WR2 commanded). Can you see how flawed your "trade up from 59.....if MLB starts moving" quote is? It could very well be too late at that point to get the one they want! lb>WR2>TE2. While a good WR is an enormous asset, getting the 4th or 5th WR entails a lot of risk (see Z Jones, K Benjamin). The smart play is to buy a good WR (DHop) and draft a top 2 lb (Campbell). Quote
Gambit Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 If one of the tackles falls to us, draft them to help fix our OLine. As soon as they don't need the help of Knox, he can be used how he should've been. If I have to choose between TE and WR, it depends on who falls. Washington would be very intriguing imo. Quote
Your Brown Eye Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 All things being equal ... WR. In this particular draft...the value and talent is TE, so my vote is TE. Quote
C.Biscuit97 Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 If the bills were smart, they look at the amount of teams that win SBs who have a dominant TE. I like Knox but he isn’t a TE teams spend the week game planning for. Imagine Allen having Mayer in the middle of the field as a security blanket. Or having him dominate d bags in the run game because we can be so versatile with our formations and personnel. this is the golden age of receivers. They are growing on trees. But for some reason, this franchise hates the idea of having a beast TE. Worked well for the Pats. And the chiefs. then drafted multiple receivers in the draft (unless JSN slides because he’s perfect for us). 4 hours ago, MJS said: How is this a question? Go around the league and see what #2 TE's are paid vs #2 receivers. That should answer your question as far as value. We need a #1 TE and there’s a few in this draft. Quote
Chaos Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 167 WR votes exceed TE votes by 7:1. There seems to be a clear board consenus on this subject. https://www.twobillsdrive.com/community/topic/246531-which-position-group-should-the-bills-target-in-draft-rd-1-based-on-bills-depth-chart-as-of-319202/#comment-8323705 1 Quote
Mister Defense Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Why get another top tight end when Knox is already used so poorly by Dorsey? It is as nonsensical as getting a better running back, a waste of time. How many targets did Knox have last year? 60? How many did Kelce have? Dorsey seems to have almost no use for, or ideas for, using the middle of the field effectively with his running backs of tight ends. The Bills payed huge money to Knox last year. How many games would you say he made a difference in? But just like with Singletary, not Knox's fault, but the fault of a poor offensive coordinator who doesn't know how to use all of the field. Or make the best use of his players. 3 Quote

There was talk on the radio about the reason Josh was reluctant to take a lot more check downs and quick slants and throwing darts. Maybe Dorsey was reluctant to call them also. It was said that the throwing motion on those throws created different stresses on the elbow vs. the long release. Not only do I expect a better run game, but more of a quick, move the chains offense this year. I have faith in Dorsey. But what makes you think these things about the coming year? Have you heard Dorsey or others on the Bills specifically address these concerns, changes? Of course I am hoping you are right, but the fact that Dorsey never got better at this, and was the main reason the extremely one dimensional Bills had almost no chance in the playoffs, makes me skeptical. It was as if Dorsey was a one trick pony, with Josh Allen, on the run, winging it down the field, his go to play. Edited April 4, 2023 by Mister Defense 1 Quote

So I'll take a Kelce type player. As Beane said we want the best weapon. of course, but that’s like saying, let’s take the Randy Moss typewide receiver. like any other position just because you take a tight end in the first round does not mean they are a can’t miss player. Hayden hurst now on his fourth team, and Mike Geseiki, the dolphins version of the bills Tremaine Edmunds, both come to mine as former first round tight ends. If the bills do draft a tight end in the first round it would certainly mean a pretty drastic change in play calling and offensive philosophy. Which might not be a bad thing. Quote

Knox’s numbers last year were very similar to his numbers in 2021 under Daboll. 1 Quote
papazoid Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 (edited) maybe dorsey doesn"t utilize the TE much because Knox is mediocre at best and the other TE's are garbage knox has average hands and below average blocking....he's nothing special Edited April 4, 2023 by papazoid Quote
Simon Says Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Are you saying this is about the #27 pick? Does the TE you choose at 27 have a first-round value? Who; Mayer or Kincaid? The question assumes you want to draft both a TE and a WR, so to answer this you have to look at the value of each position at 59. Are you stating that the need for TE and WR is higher than the need for a middle linebacker, or tackle, etc.? Quote
BruceVilanch Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 I think WR's generally translate better earlier in the NFL. But I'm not ready to give up on a 24 year old Gabe Davis. but for this question, WR. Quote

Dorsey, IIRC was a Heisman winner that had Shockey and Winslow. I'm sure he's familiar with TEs and how to use them. Saffold was an absolute waste, Brown had no off season and one year with his 2nd O.C....and Dion is starting to look soft. If Kromer can light a fire on this line (which I won't call set yet), there should be enough improvement to be able to run the ball. Hopefully he'll have solid slot play and Knox doesn't have to line up behind the RG to help in pass pro. Quote

But it sounds more like hope than actual evidence that Dorsey and the Bills plan to change their ways and create a real, multidimensional NFL offense where the tight ends, the short passing game, and running game are seminal components. Good point on Winslow and Shockey, and yes, it makes sense that Dorsey learned something from those great players in Miami. Did he also play with any high level running backs? Quote

TE Rankings #1 - Kelce KC #2 - Kittle SF #4 - Goedert Phi #23 - Knox Buf notice a trend ?....3 of the final 4 teams who played in Conference Championship games have a Top TE TE is the biggest/hardest mismatch in coverage TE is by far the weakest position group on Bills. the only group Beane hasn't added to this offseason. Where are you getting your stats that Knox is the #23 TE? Knox had a 74% catch rate on 65 targets with 7 TDs. In today's NFL he should have a minimum number of targets pushing 90. That would put his yards receiving in the 700s. That's around top 5 for the league and his TDs already are top 3. They need only to throw him the ball more. Quote
