GB demonstrates how NOT to do it with QBs in the modern NFL

GB is probably trading Rodgers and letting Love start next year but they have essentially wasted his entire rookie contract and will go from paying one QB big money to paying another QB big money in short order if he does well...

This is NOT the way you do it anymore...worked well back in 2000 maybe but not anymore. The NFL is a changed league with how QBs are paid and how much cap they take up and a huge part of building a SB caliber team is taking advantage of those early windows when you have a franchise QB on a rookie deal so they can have more money to build around him that they won't have once they have to start paying them.

GB essentially squandered that with their archaic thought process on how to draft and develop QBs these days and are demonstrating to the NFL how not to do it.

There are plenty of ways to squander the rookie contract franchise QB window. Bills certainly blew it.

KC cashed in. Russ Brady and Ben come to Mind.

who else?

Squandering the QB on a rookie contract doesn't mean you blew it. Sometimes you make enough right moves and things go wrong.

If Von Miller hadn't been injured, Miller particularly but also Hyde and all the others, and if we hadn't had that bizarre season with Hamlin and a mass shooter and blizzards  and so on, leading to that weird game where the Bills just seemed like they just didn't play like the Bills we know, IMO we'd have won it. No way to know that. Oh, and Josh injuring his elbow. But while we missed out, there's no particular reason to think we blew it.

Sometimes, stuff happens. That is a universal truth.

Wow!  What they squandered was perhaps Rogers career by being dumb and drafting Love instead  of someone who could actually help the team the last 4 years. Drafting Love when they did would be like the Pats drafting a QB in the first round while Brady was still around and going to the AFC Championship game like every year.. just dumb!

Now if they had done this say 2 years ago then it’s smart especially if it’s a raw talent that needs be refined especially with Rogers talk in g about retiring for the last what 3 years?

Nobody said the Bills are well run did they? But in comparison, Rodgers waiting on the bench for 5 years.. Love has wasted 3 years, and those 8 years yielded exactly zero SB appearances, so was it worth it?

Considering they had a first ballot hall of fame QB on their roster for 30 years and couldn’t come up with more than they did, year, they wasted a lot.

They could have also moved up to get Any of the other 3 HOF QBs in the draft where they wasted picks on Losman.  Or they could have admitted they struck out and waited on drafting a QB instead of going all  Buddy Nix and forcing it anyway.

Rodgers sat for three years (05’-07’) like Jordan Love, not five.

As for HOF QBs, there were several others competing against Favre and Rodgers in the NFC during that timeframe. Favre lost to Aikman’s Cowboys three times before getting to a SB. Lost to Elway in his second SB. He then lost to Steve Young, Kurt Warner, Vick, McNabb, Eli Manning, etc.

Rodgers is a bit more interesting as he didn’t face the same number of HOF QBs. Still lost to Warner and Brady. Lost to the 49ers an inordinate amount of times to sandwich his career. He’s had plenty of talent around him though. Even the past few years he’s been playing with multiple probowlers and all-pros on both sides of the ball. Heck Micah Hyde was stuck behind multiple pro bowlers for the start of his career. There have been some freakish plays mixed in that rival our own “13 seconds”. Most notably the onside kick against Wilson’s Seahawks and the “Fail Mary” with replacement refs that robbed GB of home field advantage. Having a pro bowl DT retire mid career, pro bowl CB and all pro safety retire from injuries mid Super Bowl window also screwed that team. Most folks don’t remember how good some of those Packers teams were. For example, that Super Bowl team had a HOF safety, 3x all pro safety, and two pro bowl corners one of which was rounding into a top 5 CB in Sam Shields.

Winning Super Bowls is difficult. We’ve all had our expectations slanted by the Patriots success and most recently Mahomes/Reid and the Chiefs. McCarthy certainly screwed the pooch with game management several years against other playoff coaches, but he was/is no Dick Jauron.

GB is one of the worst run franchises in the NFL, they have squandered back to back HOF QBs by refusing to get decent coaching and weapons for their QBs.  They are the Browns with luck drafting QBs.

The OP is sort of right IMO, if you take Love, the MOST you give him is one year, trade Rodgers when he will bring you back a nice package of picks to surround your new QB with talent and have 4-5 years of top young talent playing on Rookie deals, see Cinci as an example of what can happen.  They were bad enough to get #1 overall then got lucky enough to be back at 4 the next year, they are awesome because of it.  The Pack screwed themselves, they’ll get next to nothing for Rodgers now and they have no idea what Love will actually be, if he’s great, they turn around and have to hand him the same money Rodgers was getting.

They won two SuperBowls with those QBs. How many did the Bills win?

How many HOF QBs have the Bills had in that span?

Why deal with Rodgers BS?  Either show up or GTFO, they completely mismanaged all of it.

So I guess what I'd say is that GB was not dumb to take a QB if they thought Love was a franchise talent.

What was not smart was drafting for defensive need in round 1 ALMOST EVERY YEAR during Rodgers career.    That's where they f*cked up.   Big time.

This. I have been arguing this since the pick. Jordan Love was not the problem (even if he ends up not panning out). The number of running backs, blocking tight ends and safeties they have spent day 1 and 2 picks on in the decade or so since Rodgers won his superbowl is the problem.

I've always blamed Donahoe for not taking Roethlisberger, who he wanted.  At the time he said he couldn't get someone to trade with to get ahead of Pittsburgh, but I've always said he didn't offer enough.  On the other hand, I believe Manning & Rivers were out of reach, because he would have had to trade up to 2 or 3 to spoil the Giants/Chargers trade & that may not have been realistic.

They are the only team to pull off drafting a legends replacement at Qb.  Learning from an All timer has alot of benefits.  Greenbay would be wise to try again.  Or dump everything into this year and when you fail you are the Saints.

Why? Because he is a first ballot HOFer.. literally won the NFL 2 years in a row..  that was a silly question!!  Your assumption is Love was ready go these last 4 years.. the truth is they were thinking re pray what they did with Farve with Rogers.. will it work? Maybe and only a damn fool moves on from a great QB to early..
