What people don’t realize is that in a version of Tampa 2 defense, a tall MLB is your best defense against skinny posts.  That’s why Brian Urlacher was so good.  London Fletcher would be a liability for this Bills team.

Urlacher made plays.  Edmunds doesn’t. Edmunds lack of big play ability makes him expendable to me.

If our expectations are only for him to not mess up and be functional, then we will never win the Super Bowl.

The question is how good will Edmunds be when he reaches his prime. His development is on such an upward trajectory there is no telling how good he can be. The guy was 24 when he finished his time with us. Obviously we could not afford what he will get, but hopefully he stays out of the AFCE.

He's also a fish out of water in our alignment, he knows that.  All one has to do is watch VA Tech games with him to see that.

Again, I think that after he leaves, once he's in a classic 4-3, we'll be talking about him next season just like talk about Teller and to a lesser extent Hodgins.

Beane's dumpster-diving is catching up to him.

Completely different defenses.  We play coverage with light boxes all day.  Fletcher played with Spikes and Crowell and had big Pat and Sam Adams in front of him and Vincent and Milloy behind him.  Edmunds is being asked to be the worlds largest strong safety yet still be our run stopping MLB.  Pretty sure any LB would get exposed in the defense we run including Fletcher.

London, dude was underrated and is a victim of fan “group think.”

we should have never let him go.

Agreed 100%. He was the a product of Aaron schobel syndrome, good player on a bad team who takes way too plan when they aren’t close to the problem.

but this isn’t really a fair comparison. Fletcher was already a starting MLB on his second team and was 27.  TE is 24 so a better question would be would rather have Fletcher or TE at 27 (with 2 more years of starting experience)?

I absolutely love Fletcher and he was more an instinctual MLB while TE is a freak physical talent. But I still kinda believe in the upside of TE and that’s why I hate losing him.  But Fletcher is a guy who maximized his talent while we are just hoping that TE will and that would be the best MLB in the league. I get losing him but it sucks.

It’s already been said but give me Spikes all day.

Different positions brother. But that one year of prime spikes was one of the best defensive seasons in Bills history. Just another reason I hate Mike Vick.

Beane needs his best offseason to keep us in the conversation for SB contender. I don’t know about you, but his FA misses and pedestrian drafts doesn’t give me much confidence. The guy has to bring in some difference makers on both sides of the ball. He passed on Edmunds and he was our best defender. He can get two good players for Edmunds tag money. Let’s see how aggressive he is.

I think that if you compare the first five seasons of each you'll see a different picture.  Fletcher's best seasons by a wide margin were his seasons 6-10, his prime years.  It's not fair to compare those to Edmund's pre-prime seasons.

But to say that we've seen his ceiling when he isn't even in his prime yet is a bit premature, don't ya think.  I mean Edmunds will only be 25 this season.  Fletcher's best seasons were when he was 28-32.

If you ask me, after he leaves we'll be talking about him like we do Teller.

The team also doesn't use him entirely to his strengths.  Watching him at VA Tech he was prolific.  If he's in a similar role in the NFL he'll shine like Fletcher.  Possibly better.

The one area where he's already better than Fletcher is in his pass-coverage skills.  His height helps with that.

London's rookie year he practically didn't play. His next 5 years he had better numbers than Edmunds.

Fletcher

Ints   6

Sacks  18

TFL   47

Edmunds

Ints  5

Sacks  6.5

TFL  32

....maybe Tremaine continues to grow & develop. But I just never see him being a playmaker LB.  Hopefully he goes to the NFC.

Fletcher. Edmunds is/was a terrible lb who as a leader couldn’t establish an aggressive culture for the D.

A "terrible" LB?

He is one of the top FA's out there right now. Opposing fans have a much higher estimation of him than some here.
