13-3...Widely considered a top 10 defense in the league in 2022 while missing Tre White, Von Miller, Micah Hyde, Jordan Phillips, for significant portions of the season. And people are acting like this is a historically bed defense while celebrating a respected coach taking a year off.

I don’t think he’s coming back. I honestly believe this is the bills being classy

Something I wanted McDermott to do this year, and looks like that may be the case, he needs to be calling the defense and taking more control.

I want to see how a McDermott defense looks, not a Franzier's.

About Bieniemy or Frazier? I guess I’ll go both. Reid stood in front of all the owners at a meeting asking why hasn’t he been given a shot at being a head coach. And made it known that Bieniemy wasn’t retained in the hopes that he could spread his wings to one day become one.

Now you have Frazier…who decides he’s going to “take a year off” and return in 2024. The bills have already hired other coaches to fulfill his duties. Is the plan for the bills to just “get by” while Frazier is out doing whatever? Sounds like a real Super Bowl contending team. If health issues caused him to step aside, that’s a serious gaffe by the bills pr team. But hey they thought Matt Azaria’s problems were okay before that leaked too. Think about the memo that Kim Pegula wrote a couple years ago about needing to maintain their “lifestyle” and fired a bunch of people…why do I need to pay Leslie Frazier a million plus dollars if I already have people in place that are capable? The whole thing is a joke.

I mean you guys are giving Frazier way too much blame and not nearly enough to Brandon Beane. No one forced the Bills to be in the loaded  QB conference with an entire secondary of sub 4.5-4.6 players, and have exactly one drafted plus DE over the last 5 years in Groot.

Ftazier can only the personnel he’s given and that personell grouping was hugely flawed and Frazier probably had them playing above their athletic talent levels for vast majority of the last 3 years.

Like the lack of pro bowl nods isn’t necessarily a lack of respect. It’s also an acknowledgment of the level of physical talent this team has on defense.

So I guess be careful for what you wish for, because you might just get it

The entire unit had injuries like all year.  It's hard to say what was or wasn't built by beane with the amount of injuries.

Obviously Miller and Jones missed the 2nd playoff game.  Damar Hamlin.  Hyde missed most of the year.  Poyer was injured basically the entire season.  Phillips missed time with hamstring/shoulder and was generally banged up.  Groot missed time.  Oliver missed time.  Epenesa missed a game.  Basham missed a game.  Settle missed time.  Eli Ankou was on IR.  Edmunds and Milano missed time.  White missed camp and half the season.  Benford missed time.  Elam missed time.  Jackson missed time.

Funny. Though I think Beane is at fault for some of his defensive draft choices, I think you’re giving Frazier too much credit. It’s his job to coach up and maximize the players’ talents. I see none of that in Buffalo, only the same stale cover 2 plug and play scheme he rolls out each game.

My big problems with the D are scheme specific. Soft loose coverage bad coverage sets in critical situations.

That and generic problems that eschew of not practicing fundamentals enough; tackling high, poor form tackling, loss of gap integrity.

I don't know what the hell fully happened vs Bengals at the LOS though.

There’s a ton of replacement candidates here on TBD.

And those ton of replacements could have certainly done a better job for the 13 second debacle last year. 😉

I think you’re missing the sentiment here. Yes, everyone has been thrilled with the recent success. But…there comes a time when even the most devoted fans say “been there, done that”. The drought ended over half a decade ago now. It’s time to get to the next level, and going into 2023 with nothing more than more of the same is a bit too little for many fans to look forward to. It’s not personal. The Team simply has to take another step forward.

Yeah  but we didn't have a top defense when it matters most in the post season

Leslie doesn’t need you to defend him, he has been a good regular season DC, the record says as much, but come playoff time his scheme showed to be lacking, repeatedly, and as is the norm in the NFL, he was shown the door, in a gracious manor by his boss.

Maybe if we are fortunate, McDermott has seen the light and realizes that the  defense needs schematic help, and we all know Leslie was not going to make adjustments, he never has, so it is what it is, Leslie retires a rich man, with a fine reputation. All is good.

GO BILLS!!!

This defense, which is McD's, depends on getting pressure with the front 4.  When that doesn't happen, you get the results we got against good teams.  The scheming isn't going to change as long as McD is here.  Unless they can generate a better pass rush with the front 4, I don't see much changing. Maybe a little more aggressive play calling, but that's only going to go so far.

If anybody thinks this is anything other than a polite way of not renewing his contract I have some land for sale in Florida.

they hire a new DC he is not coming back.

Yeah, I heard Beane only drafts guys to stand back 10-12 yards when the other team needs 5.

The DC wasn't putting his players in positions to be effective during critical downs. You can argue that the players are subpar, but they were basically put in situations that were doomed from the get go.

And that’s why 13 seconds was a microcosm of Frazier’s playoff woes. You can argue the defensive talent all you want, but when the talent isn’t put in position to be successful - like 13 seconds - you have a schematic issue.

I think it was time for a change. Nothing against the guy, he has put together some great defenses, almost every year finishing in the top five. It's just when the pressure has been on in the big moments it feels like he hasn't gotten it done, I guess.

Wish him all the best. Might be better to get a fresh perspective in there, even though it'll likely be an internal candidate replacing him, someone else at the helm might produce different results.

I wonder if McDermott just doesn't take over defensive play calling for this season if they really do expect Frazier back in 2024. I mean I know it happens in other fields where someone might need a long period of time away and someone else is promoted to fill in only to revert back to their previous job once the original person returns. But I dunno if that works in the NFL. What if the replacement does a better job, ya know? Just kind of an interesting situation.

Wasn’t there rumors last year the Daboll was going to leave the Bills last year even if he didn’t get a head coaching job? Something about butting heads with McDermott? And now a season later our DC, after basically all the coaching changes and coordinators positions have been filled, decides to ‘take a year off’?
Odd. Very odd.
