I am not particularly fond of opera, but, growing up in Germany, I have seen 20+. By far the most impressive considering the performance and the venue was Verdi's "Aida" in the Arena of Verona. The Arena is a quite large and well-preserved open-air Roman amphitheater from 30 A.D. When I was there nearly 50 years ago, they did not even have microphones and loudspeakers, which were installed in 2011. The Arena (Wikipedia pic) I've seen a few in there. I agree it is a wonderful experience not to be missed. And the colosseum in Verona is much better preserved and complete than the big one in Rome, to boot. Smaller, but more complete and it gives a better impression of how it was. But admittedly, I'm a hardcore opera fan; had season tickets to the National Opera in DC for years. Sat across the aisle from Alan Greenspan and Andrea Mitchell. LOL Here's the inside: 1 Quote

I've been fortunate enough to check off a number of the things on your travel list - I'd put the Alaska cruise at the top. No check marks for your sports list - Kentucky Derby and SEC football game are great ones - for the SEC game I'd go with the Florida/Georgia Outdoor Cocktail Party. Ironically I strongly considered the NCAA lacrosse final four last year. Ironic because before last year I had never watched a lacrosse game at any level - but my eldest goes to UMD and the final four wasn't far from home. "Enjoy every day as if it is my last" - can't think of any better words to live by. 1 Quote

I was fortunate to do a week on land and then the week long cruise. It was great, but even two weeks wasn't long enough. Not sure if I'll ever get to Australia but my guess is it would need to be a minimum of two weeks too. Quote
