What next? Jesus  won't be lily-white?

For decades, the gender of God has prompted debate within the Church, with many calling for male pronouns He and Him, as well as reference to Our Father, to be scrapped in favour of either gender neutral or female alternatives.

Now, in what would mark a departure from centuries of tradition, bishops are to launch a project “on gendered language” referencing God in church services later this year.

The move has been criticised by conservatives, who have warned that “male and female imagery is not interchangeable”. However, liberal Christians have  welcomed it, claiming that “a theological misreading of God as exclusively male is a driver of much continuing discrimination and sexism against women”.

Details of the plans emerged in a written question to the Liturgical Commission, which prepares and promotes forms of service and religious worship in the Church, at General Synod, the Church’s lawmaking body, which is sitting this week.

Any permanent changes or rewriting of scriptures with gendered language would have to be agreed by a future meeting of Synod.

God is a being

No need for human gender.

By the way, no knowledgeable human thinks that Jesus was "lily white."

That is nonsense.

He was the same as others of his locale/era.

It is mentioned that his appearance never stood out.

Are you serious?

I am aware of no art work that has ever been produced that claims to be a likeness of the appearance of Jesus.

He was simply an unremarkable looking male of his time, and went to lengths to not disclose his divinity on a large scale.

A few miracles here and there, with often admonitions to not mention stuff.

Anything of an unusual appearance would certainly have been mentioned.

Just dumb.

Either way, God does not have human gender.

So all the Christian art work depicting Jesus are what? The many Churches that have him in stained glass

Are you attempting to say that depictions of deities that reflect one's culture are efforts to "white"wash said divine being?

someone could read about Correlation does not imply causation.

Or does the fact the Douglas Zion church in Elmira NY has a huge Black Jesus painted as a mural on the front of the building, discredit your statement?

Just seems inaccurate, not a big deal, but kind of funny. Others do it too

I am sure his point is that through history people have all tried to be as Christlike as possible and when explaining to children it is easiest for them to see themselves in an entity that is physically similar and familiar. To make a different argument would require a level of stupidity that only Billsy has around here, not Tibs. Also God does not have a gender he is above all that and  our tiny human minds can't properly understand.

The RC and EO churches both allow for icons to be constructed with similar ethnic markers as the local populations.

Anyway I guess all this is what happens when a king decides to start a schism because he doesn't like his wife.

All Mighty God, if you're monitoring this message board please hit the "reset" button on the human race because your experiment has failed as some sort of social madness and insanity has overcome the world you have created which leaves the human race capable of only focusing on things of a trivial nature while things of importance are left to die and whither.  or if this is some "Matrix" type existence simulation, please, erase the program and start over.  Thank you.

It's essentially a call for the extinction of humanity, because some of them hurt his feelings.

New level of ignorance regarding religion.

What madness is next?

You mean Jesus wasn't really born on Dec 25th?

No, that's just because it's the Winter Solstice we celebrate Christ-mass then

Ya.

Because of his "lily white skin," he needed to be born on the day of least daylight.

everybody knows that.

Not sure what "Christ-mass" means, and not interested in finding out.
