It was the smart move.  Baseball is WAYYYY more competitive, with the best players usually NOT being U.S. citizens.  As a first overall NFL pick, he would have had to pull a Ryan Leaf to not make guaranteed bank.  It would have taken him years to even be considered to be bumped up to the major leagues in baseball.

2004 was it.  That's almost 20 years.  Even if they drafted a 16-year-old then, it's unlikely that he'd still be playing professional baseball (or any other sport).

meh.  I wouldn’t have wanted his attitude on the A’s.

Too bad he wasnt better in baseball.  NFL history would be much different.  New England might have zero rings if Tom chose baseball.

 

in history im sure it happens often.  A super multi sport athlete chooses wrong sport - maybe the greatest hockey player ever,  never got to play hockey, instead playing another sport for example

Ryan Leaf DID make guaranteed bank tho...for as little as he did, he made $13 million in career earnings. Pales compared to Jamarcus Russell who made over $39 million tho.

Yeah that was crazy...I believe he was the last 1st overall pick under the old system too wasn't he?

 

Nowadays the easiest route to making bank as a QB while not being able to play is to look good in the preseason over multiple years so someone THINKS you might be good, then signs you as a high priced backup but you don't actually play...then rinse and repeat.  Chase Daniel has used this method to make over $41 million in his career all while throwing a total of 273 passes over 14 years and starting a total of 5 games.  Most passes he threw in a season were with the Bears when he had 78 over 2 games started and 5 played total.
