Bill O’Brien - thoughts about him as OC?

Creative former Patriots offensive coach for a very successful offense who also did a two-year stint at Alabama, where his offense was criticized for being ever-so-slightly underwhelming relative to the year before he arrived. Sound familiar? I doubt it will happen because I expect McDermott to give Dorsey a pass. But I am throwing it out there given the noise that the Pats may go after him and because I’ve been pretty underwhelmed by Dorsey despite the #2 ranking. As Joe B says in his Athletic article, the window ain’t gonna be open long and McDermott got rid of Dennison after one season.  If I’m O’Brien and were presented with the option, working with Josh Allen would be a far more attractive proposition than working with Mac Jones. (Also, small point: like Daboll, who has an engineering degree from the U of Rochester, O’Brien is presumably a book-smart guy given that he graduated from Brown.)

To reiterate, I strongly doubt this happens given McDermott’s history with assistants (excepting Dennison, who was actually terrible) and the excuse making that’s currently going on inside the organization regarding this season’s outcome.

What's wrong with hiring Frank Reich as OC?

This team doesn’t need a 2nd year OC. We need a very experienced and innovative OC. It’s foolish to wait until the end of the season to realize Hines should have been factored in the offense more.

Sometimes I get the impression that the sequence of events is like this:

  • McDermott  - try to get McCafferty or Hockenstien
  • Beane - here have Hines
  • McDermott - I don't want Hines on offense, does he do special teams?
  • Beane - probably, give him a shot at that.

I think this is who I want as OC

He doesnt call plays. Or at least doesnt do it well. He isnt much of an offensive "guru", as much as he is a nice leader who isnt much of a threat to Pederson (the real play caller).

I wouldnt mind him as QB coach actually. Someone to help keep Josh level. But that isnt going to happen.

He never said he wants Dorsey.  He just said good things about him, like Josh does with everyone.

I disagree.  There was a press conference where Josh clearly indicated he was the best man for the job.  Josh got Beasley and Brown back.  Gentry has been on the PS until recently because why, hes a great prospect?

How tight do you think McD and Beane are?

I didn't hear Josh say anything different about Dorsey than what I've heard him say in the past.

And given how little Dorsey even tried to piece Beasley into the offense, I don't even know why they even bothered bringing him back.

There was a press conference I think right after the KC game last year when it was known Dabol was gone where he all but said this is the guy I want.

That's who they were going with anyway, so he's just towing the company line.

And as far as Beasley, again, no point even bringing him back.

What the heck do we know about hiring coordinators?

First, everybody says we need a young offensive mind. We got one.

Now, everybody says let's hire O'Brien, an older retread with a bad attitude. Thank goodness he went to NE.

What logic is there in fishing for coordinators? You just have to pick a guy with some experience that matched the concept of putting your players in the bast position to succeed. The only thing you cannot do is to pick a guy that wants the players to conform to his scheme. If we do that, Josh will fail to progress.

Frank Reich called plays for the colts since he's been HC.

Franks problem is that he's not HC material, but as OC he could be very good.  He's a really good X's and O's guy.

If Frank washes out from his HC interviews, I would have him on speed dial.

Bsed on those Colts teams, that isnt much of a selling point for me.
