So you’re saying it’s “less than zero,” and my math teacher was wrong. I knew it!

00.00.99.  Clock will say zero but still .99 tenths of second before it all zeros out.  Weird but that’s the explanation i heard on a podcast a while back from an ex ref

Okay enough is ENOUGH.  How many times yesterday was the clock at 0 and then the ball was snapped or a crazy timeout was called.

These half second - second + judgment calls by the field officials need to be REMOVED FROM THE GAME.

Solution:  Play Clock hits 0 = automatic Buzzer in the stadium.  The NBA does this for their shot clock.

It should also create more urgency for offenses to make sure they get the snap off.

Put a vibrating watch on the official responsible for the clock. He watches the snap if the watch vibrates before it is snapped - DOG.

At the very least, the official tasked with observing the play clock has a buzzer so they don't need to eyeball both the clock and the snap.

If you trust the official. That would be no improvement to the present

amazing they don't do this. Too simple

There should be a better way to do this. Why can’t the booth official call the flag? Seems like a simple fix.

Right now there’s always going to be that extra second because the official waits until it hits zero and then checks for the snap.

Thats what our old play calling system was with Rex and Greg Roman.  Roman got zapped when the play clock hit :01 and then yelled the first words that came into his head.  It was usually a brand of cookie.

This makes sense but it isn't clear to the viewing audience or anyone in the stadium. Even the announcers are confused. Maybe displaying the play clock in tenths of a second would provide clarity.

Which is ridiculous. Either switch two two decimal point clocks or have some sort of light go off so it’s more obvious when that last second is gone. It could then be reviewable to see if the ball is hiked before the light goes off. Relying on refs to count that final second in their heads leaves room for a huge margin of error.

I think we should go to three or four digits after the decimal

If the NFL actually enforced the play clock like the NBA enforced the shot clock, then Dorsey would adjust. Teams know they get that extra second (or more) and it affects their behavior.

The only explanation for why the NFL still calls it this way is because they want it to remain subjective so they can ignore it when it suites the leagues needs.

I find it very appropriate that we are having this discussion as we prepare for the Bills to play Cincy in the playoffs, since that game included one of the most painful delay of game flags in league history....

On the delay they were finally forced to call on the 4th down, the clock was on zero for at least an additional two seconds before the flag came.  Ridiculous.

Not sure if it's changed the outcome of a game this year, but something like this can and it's just a matter of time before it does.

It's the NFL's credibility on the line here.  If they don't address something which should be a no-brainer...throwing a flag if the clock is at zero and the ball is still under center...they're only hurting their own product.

If they do nothing, it will have game impacting ripples if not possibly even game deciding repercussions in the future. Guaranteed.

Be careful what you wish for. Josh is often waving to Dorsey to get the play in.
But what you say makes sense. When did it become ok to put the call in the hands of the officials. It’s math.

Get rid of Dorsey & that problem would be gone---lol

Typically you get an extra second or so from the official watching the clock because they have to look and see if the ball has been snapped. If it's being snapped at that moment you don't get called even tho it's technically delay of game.

But seriously. There should be a buzzer on their hand for when it hits zero. They feel it and the ball isn’t snapped, penalty automatically. The crazy thing is how slow these refs scans are to the point that they can’t look at the clock and in their peripheral see the ball isn’t snapped
