Big Blitz Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Herbert banged up to. I’m not sure what Staley was supposed to do. But I would not have played either. Three Chargers injured against Broncos. Why did Brandon Staley play starters? DENVER — A couple of questions into his postgame news conference, Chargers coach Brandon Staley was asked whether receiver Mike Williams could have returned after departing the game in the second quarter with a back injury. “Possibly,” Staley said, “yeah.” Unless Staley uses an unconventional definition of “returned” or received inaccurate information from the team’s medical staff, he lied. Quarterback Justin Herbert’s most explosive target, Williams was unable to walk on his own power later on Sunday when he made his way to the team bus from the visiting locker room at Empower Field. His arm was draped over the right shoulder of a Chargers’ staffer, who held him around his lower back. Williams shuffled his feet slowly. What a debacle. What an absolute Charger of a debacle. With the Chargers locked in as the AFC’s No. 5 seed before kickoff, the game was a meaningless exercise until Staley decided it wasn’t, and they now could be forced to play their postseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars without Williams, linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. and edge rusher Joey Bosa. https://www.latimes.com/sports/chargers/story/2023-01-08/hernandez-analyzes-chargers-at-broncos?_amp=true 1 Quote

Captain Hindsight Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Staley is the biggest problem in that building. He’s lucky he’s playing a pretty weak opponent this week 1 1 1 Quote
What a Tuel Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Chargers don't have the luxury of resting their starters and coming out flat Saturday. Quote

H2o Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 If I were Sean Payton, this is where I would be looking to go. He'd have one of the best young QB's in the league, a really good group of skill players all the way around, and a defense that could be easily top 10 in the league if everyone is healthy. If the Chargers were smart, they would be all over this. But I don't believe the Chargers are smart, and will likely continue the course of futility. Just now, NoSaint said: Sean Payton would be such a game changer there. We must have posted this at the same time. 6 Quote
Don Otreply Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 They are football players right? so they play football. According to many here injuries are not an excuse, next man up, and all that whooie. Can’t have it both ways. GO BILLS!!! 2 Quote

D. L. Hot-Flamethrower Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 With a quality coach this team would be up with the Bills, Chiefs and Bengals. He holds them back with his reinvent the game of football mentality. 1 Quote

They're always super talented on paper and are always close to making the leap and they have injuries or just play like crap. It's a shame too because Bosa and Williams just came back from injury 1 Quote

SCBills Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Cappa got hurt for the Bengals yesterday as well.. not sure of the severity. I know the Bengals had something to play for, I guess.. but if he's out for the playoffs, that's 2/5ths of their starting OL out going into the post-season. 1 Quote

Billznut Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 If the Chargers lose to Jax, their owner would be smart to cut Staley loose and bring in Payton. That team would instantly be better, make things much tougher on KC in the coming years within the division and as a byproduct of that, it would theoretically help Buffalo’s chances to have a better record than KC in future seasons. The Chargers win in spite of Staley, not because of him. He routinely makes boneheaded decisions, yesterday was just another example that will hurt his team going forward. Chargers should move on with a loss to Jax. If they win that one, there is no chance they will let him go. 1 2 Quote

Well, you can compare and contrast to the personnel decisions made by Brian Daboll. Daboll said, not only are we gonna rest our starting QB, we're gonna rest our backup QB and a bunch of our other key players. And that will give our backups a chance to shine and show what they've got And while the game wasn't really as close as the 16-23 score would appear, you have to admit they did a very creditable job against the Eagles, who were not flying as far and as high as I think they believed they would when the actives list came out. As a result, the Giants are in much better shape heading into their matchup with the Vikings, than the Chargers are to take on a surging Jax. The Vikes only beat the Giants on a Christmas Eve 61 yd fieldgoal with 4 seconds left, and I'm sure the Giants are eager for a rematch. Edited January 9, 2023 by Beck Water 5 Quote
