OT…possible permanent neutral site AFC and NFC Championship Games

Syracuse really needs to update the Dome so it can host NFL games.  Could have hosted 2 this year (Bills moved game and the AFC Champ game.  could also host preseason games.)

Since Indy and Det are out, Pgh would be a good area to host the game.  Short drive from Buffalo :) Very short drive for Bills fans in Pgh (there are quite a few!)

Why would SU even care about this?  They already have numerous dates between football and basketball through fall and winter at the dome.

Interesting idea. Got me to thinking, where? I'm trying to think of bigger cities . . .

  • San Diego
  • St Louis
  • San Antonio
  • Austin
  • Louisville
  • Orlando
  • Columbus
  • Hartford
  • Birmingham
  • ?

I think Austin ticks all the right boxes.

Jerry would be way too jealous to have it on Austin.

I vote the Oakland Coliseum… old school…as long as they leave the dirt infield painted green…

more money.  More money for the city as well.  Having an NFL game on campus would be sweet.

Screw all this neutral site crap. If a team doesn't make the playoffs,  they shouldn't be hosting games.

And and city/ town/ area that wants to host NFL games without the costs of supporting a team, i say get bent.

I understand the superbowl,  nut the AFC/NFC Championship games would be to much to take away from normal fans

Not happening. Another pointless topic. Posters here need something else to do with their time. Many folks here on the game day threads, have the Bills losing the game, and requesting Frazier being fired  when they fall behind 3-0.   I can see another topic opened up soon... "All games at neutral sites?".

Like the USFL, all games at one stadium for the entire season.

However they can maximize the $$$, that's what they will be looking to do. I hope they don't though. This year's circumstances are way different. To do it every year, that would be bs.

Here's a strange idea; could the NFL build its own stadium to be used as a neutral site, maybe host a Super Bowl? Perhaps host combine, draft, other NDL events.

That would be called SoFi Stadium. Not only did Stan Kroenke screw over St. Louis, he got the NFL to help fund it, and extorted the Chargers as well.

Hate it....  Playoff games on your home turf are special... wouldn't want to lose that possibility.. Plus it makes the regular season more competitive instead of teams jockeying for comfortable positions

Totally agree! It screws the team, and it’s fans, out of what was rightly earned in the regular season. Sure, move the draft around. There is no home field advantage in the draft or the combine. There is a HUGE home field advantage in the playoffs. Regular folks who attend often should be able to attend a home game if it’s earned. Forcing them to travel is unfair.

A freakish and nearly tragic event took place on Monday night. Don’t let that be an excuse for screwing up what has worked great for years.

Don’t like it as it only punishes the number one seeds home fans! That’s what we all talk about and want each year. However we also know the NFL doesn’t really care about the fans in that aspect and if they can make some more money doing something then they will absolutely do it!

But here’s the thing: How do they make MORE money? They just make money in a different place. I think it’s a stupid idea for a variety of reasons. Screw the fans often enough and you lose eventually.

What's the point of playing for the #1 seed if you can't host the championship game ?

Why not just "preseason" the majority of your starters in December once you clinch in November ?

you are still getting the 1st round bye ! Go Bills !

The NFL and the economy will be making more money...They have to now put 70000 fans in Hotels and Food for the weekend.   Why do you think College Basketball plays in so many different cities

Will they still have a bye next year or will they add an 8th team to the playoffs ?

The NFL doesn’t own the hotels or restaurants and bars surrounding stadiums in non-NFL cities/stadiums. And they don’t care about local economies. They do not make money from that, and it’s not like games in Europe or Mexico trying to enter new markets.

It would be a horribly stupid move to take playoff games away from the home fans that supported their teams all year. That would be pissing on your loyal fans, and I don’t think they are that stupid. Why punish the economies of your member cities? Why should THEY lose out on the playoffs? Horrible idea.

College basketball does it because you have 64 teams from all over the country and they try to make travel reasonable for fans.

Season ticket holders and fans that buy tickets on a regular basis deserve the most consideration when an idea like this comes around.

Of course. And I can’t afford to buy tickets, book a hotel and a plane ticket. I would hate if this becomes the norm as soon as the Bills are good enough to possibly host a title game

NFL has 32 NFL ready stadiums. There is no reason to use a college stadium

Horrible horrible idea.

1.  In college, where the tradition of ALL postseason play for over 100 years was through the bowl system, which has always been nuetral sites...works for college playoffs because it's already established.  College fans have been going to "post season" bowl games since football began basically.

2.  The NFL makes most their money on TV deals so I can not understand how they would monetize a nuetural site confercene title game more than they do just having it played in the 1 seed stadium.

3.  Most NFL stadiums have a great deal of tax payer funding involved in them, and you can bet governors, senators and congresspeople, mayors etc...wouldn't take it well that for example, if the Bills, who now have a very good team, that can expect to play home playoff games, went to Atlanta for conference title games that might otherwise be in Western NY....the folks who are funding your new stadium might be slightly PISSED off.  ...as would most folks with civic concerns in their teams locations.

4.  Home championship games are great for the fans, and the cities that host...extra revenue for food, hotels, all that.  media attention and so on.

Also...kind of related, kind of not.

with 17 games...OR when something like a storm, or other extraordinary circumstances come up...we have some really big college venues that could host.  Rose Bowl, Michigan, Notre Dame, Husker Stadium, and so on -

****  The NFL ought to consider a series of games played at college stadiums where the teams with 9 homes games can pick a venue and host a game.  ****

Denver VS Seattle on the blue field at Boise State for example.....or Bears VS Colts at South Bend.  Maybe Jets VS Giants at West Point.  Chiefs Vikings from Huskers stadium...  Bills Eagles at Happy Valley?  The possibillities are there.  Kind of like the NHL doing the games outside in certain stadiums.

The NFL created a problem with their stupid expansion of the playoffs : only one team earns a bye and that is just too big an advantage to be fair. Two byes was a just reward to the top teams. A neutral site championship game could remedy that. If it’s being considered they know it’s a problem. Also , one of the leagues best young QBs is in Buffalo. The NFL is probably concerned about an AFC title game in Buffalo with 35 mph winds and no passing offense.
